Ezra Rothman is the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Partnership at the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County. He spends much of his time at EDC helping local businesses, often fostering connections with partner organizations and public entities. Ezra lives in Lancaster City with his wife, Rose, and dog, Howie.

Notes from last week's meeting:
News of Gregg Scott coming to Lancaster Rotary Club drew a large audience. His history as a past member and his popular previous speaking appearances attracted a lot of interest. He didn’t disappoint.
Gregg started off with a question, “Who am I describing?” When he finished, everyone thought C. Emlen Urban.
Then he showed the answer. It was himself. But as everyone thought, the description was also correct for Urban. Gregg went on to describe how bizarre the parallels were despite the fact that Urban was born in 1863 and Gregg in 1949.
In 2010, a Historic Preservation Trust tour listed 94 of Urban’s projects starting with the Southern Market in 1888. Many of these were within 1,200 feet of the center of Lancaster. They represented 21 styles, 54 types of buildings. This sparked a keen interest in Urban by Gregg and others.
A series of coincidences reinforced Gregg’s fascination. In 2017, Gregg was given the Urban’s steamer trunk from a 3-month trip that Urban took to Europe in 1911. Then, in 2018, Alexa Udy, Urban’s great- granddaughter gave Gregg the detailed journal Urban kept on that voyage. The descriptions were detailed, but, sadly, no sketches were included.
Then, a month later, Andrew Reidenbaugh packed up a huge collection of Urban’s ink-on-linen sketches and Urban’s collection of books on architecture and sent them to Gregg. In 2019, Gregg received photos of Urban and his wife from a family attorney.
When in Europe in 1911, Urban stayed at the Hotel Cecil. His journal states that they dined at the hotel’s Palm Room which was very elegant and gentlemen dressed in tuxes. In 2022, Gregg obtained Urban’s 1911 tux as noted in the October 15, 2022, LNP. The Louise Steinman von Ness Foundation is paying over $5,000 to have the tux restored and placed on a custom form.
So far, Gregg has identified 757 commissions that Urban and his staff of 5 received. Urban’s career spanned 50 years from 1885 to 1935. Urban died in 1939, ten years before Gregg was born. Gregg’s book, “Urban Legend” is due out November.
Secret: If you preorder the $120 book before November 14th, you will only pay $90, receive a signed copy by Gregg, and be invited to an appreciation party in Lancaster on November 14th.
All historic items are in the hands of F&M and Lancaster History. Future plans include a museum of architecture in Lancaster featuring Urban and other Lancaster architects in about 5 years.

“Lifetime” Member nominations open.
The Board is accepting nominations for the new Lifetime Membership category for members in good standing who are
unable to attend meetings and perhaps have stopped paying dues. The designation foregoes dues and entitles the holder to receive The Transmitter and other correspondence for life. Lifetime Members need to be nominated by active Club members and approved by the board

Club goes cashless
Since our meals are now are included in our dues, there is only a need to pay for meals when we bring guests. Cash will not be accepted. Only credit cards will be accepted.

Leave of Absence Dues Modification
The new dues structure remains in place. However, any member may request a 3-month leave of absence. Dues will be $122 for this three-month period.
Rotary Means Business on Oct. 5
at Lancaster Holiday Inn
This networking opportunity for Rotarians will take place on Thursday, October 5 at the Holiday Inn, 26 E Chestnut St., Lancaster, PA, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The event is FREE of cost to attendees thanks to venue sponsor Holiday Inn and to event sponsors Phil Saleet of Caretakers Electric and Glen Bootay of Waster Hauler Support Services, LLC. Light appetizers will be available. Street parking is available but limited. FREE parking will be available at the Duke Street Garage but all attendees who plan to park free there must provide their license plate number during the RSVP process. Holiday Inn does not validate parking. Please enter through the hotel lobby entrance and head to the Imperial Restaurant and the hostess will direct you.
The Rotary Clubs of Elizabethtown, Lancaster Hempfield and Lititz are arranging this, the first RMB in our area since before COVID.

Cookout at Rob Gallagher’s Sept. 30
Rob & Rachel Gallagher have invited everyone to come to their place Saturday at 2:00 PM, Sept. 30, for a cookout. “Amish” BBQ chicken will be provided. Everyone is invited to bring a “potluck” item of their choice and BYOB. The event is rain or shine. The address is: 331 Creek Rd., Christiana, PA.
