Speaker: Gregg Scott, FAIA “Urban Legend:
The Life & Legacy of C. Emlen Urban
Gregg will be sharing discoveries unearthed about "Lancaster's architect" when writing his soon-to-be-published book, Urban Legend; The Life & Legacy of C. Emlen Urban. In 2018, when Gregg began intensely researching Urban's life and work, there were 94 commissions attributed to Urban. As of this date, Gregg and his informal research team of local records-keepers, history buffs and Urban descendants have documented an incomprehensible 767 commissions in Urban's
relatively short career! Gregg will share new stories he learned about Urban and our local architectural history, including some tales that won't be put into print! Gregg welcomes you to join him in celebrating the amazing story of a man whose accomplishments have been lost in history until now!
Gregg was a senior partner at RLPS Architects located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A former faculty member at state and national conferences on aging, Gregg continues to provide a wide range of audiences with fresh and engaging insights into a multitude of topics. His personal interests include architectural photography, writing, lecturing, biking, hiking and anything related to Acadia National Park.
During his professional career, Gregg held credentials as an NCARB Registered Architect in 22 states. He was elevated to the American Institute of Architect’s College of Fellows, the highest honor awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the profession. Gregg graduated from the Pennsylvania State University in 1973, and was awarded a Bachelors Degree of Architecture with Honors. He has held professional affiliations with the American Institute of Architects, LeadingAge, the Historic Preservation Trust and the National Hospice Organization. Past trustee positions include Samaritan Counseling Center and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. Gregg also writes a monthly architectural design column for LNP News and has been part of a series of architectural features on WGAL News 8.
He and his wife Terri Scott reside in Northeast Harbor, ME and Lancaster, PA. They have two children and two grandchildren. Current board and community positions include the Hamilton Club, Northeast Harbor Neighborhood House, Mount Desert Island Housing Trust and Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services advisor. President's Voice – September 2023
Since we will not be holding the Rotarians in Action Meeting this month, I will utilize this column to share with you updates and actions from the September 12 gathering of the Board of Directors.
The Member Status Report indicated that we have 112 active members, not including five new members. Resignations this month were received from David Ashworth, Chuck Stambaugh and Josh McManness. Brad Forrey requested an immediate Leave of Absence and Dave Hosler requested one for January-March 2024. New members approved were Daniel Diehl and Gabby Romano and transferring member, Debra Jones.
The first group of nominees for the Lifetime Member status of the Rotary Club of Lancaster were presented and accepted at the meeting. These esteemed individuals are Bob Beers, Bill Fisher, Dave Heckel, Gene Hostetter, George Kratzert and Don Roseman. Thanks to those who submitted nominations! Please join us at the October 4 meeting when we will honor this outstanding group of Rotarians.
A group of Past Presidents submitted three proposals for the Board’s consideration. The first recommended that starting October 1, the charge for a visitor or guest meal at a meeting be raised to $20 to cover the food as well as tax and credit card fees. This was unanimously approved.
The second proposal was an offer by this group of Past Presidents to reimburse the Club for up to 10 new member initiation fees during the 23-24 Rotary Year for new members under the age of 50. This was also unanimously approved and much gratitude was expressed by the Board!
The third proposal was a recommendation for an additional classification of active members. The Board was very receptive to this proposal but asked for further work to be done to provide clarity on who will qualify, how it will be implemented and what the potential budget impact might be. Details will be announced as soon as possible.
Other conversation by the Board focused on strengthening the work of committees, building membership, securing impactful and educational speakers for our weekly meetings and supporting the objectives of our District and Rotary International. You will hear more on this work in the months to come.
I am grateful for the leadership provided by each board member and committee chair as well as for the engagement of each club member. If you have not yet plugged in to a committee that is meaningful for you, please reach out to me or a member of the board.
As I have shared before, we are part of a dynamic organization – locally and around the world! May we continue to find ways to ignite our individual and collective experiences as we serve our community, together.
Yours in Rotary,
President Beth
P.S. As many of you heard at the September 13 meeting, I am away for two weeks. We are finally taking our trip to Spain that was originally planned for 2020!

Notes from last week's meeting:
The School District of Lancaster’s new Superintendent, Dr. Keith Miles Jr. spoke at our meeting about himself and his vision for the education of Lancaster’s children.
Under Dr. Miles leadership, two of the District’s primary goals are to increase focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and narrow achievement gaps to insure that all students receive a good education. He placed a great deal of importance on community outreach to get the various immigrant, religious, minority and majority communities to come together to bring these goals to fruition. The overall theme for the administration and faculty is “Together We Can!”
When asked about sports, Dr. Miles mentioned that encouraging excellence in sports will bring an increased sense of pride to the students and the alumni. Dr. Miles is finding monthly meetings with other county school district superintendents very valuable. He is working especially close with Manheim School District which shares similar concerns.
