Notes from last week's meeting:
President’s Voice
President Beth reported we had 115 active members in ClubRunner prior to board actions.
Bruce Smith resigned and David Ashworth withdrew his resignation.
Seven members will be notified their member status has been removed due to inactivity:
John Burkholder, William Durkota, Alan Friesland, Glenn Frill, Lisa Sica, Brian Wassail, and Russell Wert. They were notified or are in the process of being notified.
Membership Classification of “Long-serving Member”
The Group of Past Presidents proposed and the RCL Board approved on 9/18/23, the creation of a new membership level called “Long- serving Members.”
The qualifications are to be at least 65 years old and have at least 20 years service to Rotary.
A member must apply to the Board to be considered for this new status. Once approved, a Long-serving Member pays $121 quarterly for dues and pays for their meal at each meeting they attend.
A list was created of all qualifying members and former members and they were contacted or are in the process of being contacted. The new level is advantageous to qualifying members who attend less that 70% of the meetings.
The other available membership levels are:
Lifetime - an honorary membership level for those proposed and inducted as described in last week’s Transmitter. There are no dues and no meals included.
Regular Active - subject to the current dues structure which includes meals based upon 70% attendance.
The board invites members to think about other membership levels to propose to the board.
Other Business
Committees are requested to establish goals and a timeline by November 14.
Each Committee is requested to establish a Liaison to the Communications Committee.
President Beth gave a shout out to the Fellowship Committee for the Barnstormers, Golf, Regatta and Picnic activities.
District 7390 DG Fred Gallery will be our guest on November 8. Please calendar that now.
The District 7390 Foundation Dinner is November 4. It includes a reception, dinner, awards, and entertainment. All are welcome, especially club foundation chairpersons, club leaders, and service project leaders. Information is at:

The New Holland Rotary Club changed their name to the Eastern Lancaster Rotary Club.
The October 25 Rotary Rendezvous will participate in District 7390’s Pints for Polio.

Why I Serve: Rakesh Popoli
Rakesh mentioned that when he retired in 2017, he was volunteering for United Way. He mentioned that he was looking for another way to give back. Sue Sutter, CEO of United Way, recommended Rotary and put Rakesh in touch with John Herr.
Since joining Rotary in 2017, Rakesh has found many ways to give back such as Power Packs. He has found joining Rotary very rewarding.
He then went on to explain his feeling of responsibility to help. It all started by an event in 1947. The British left India and partitioned it into the Muslim Pakistan partitions and Hindu & Sikh portion of India that remained. The great migration began. More than 15 million people lost their homes. Between one and two million people lost their lives. His family members were refugees.
To make a long story short, his parents and their family resettled in India with nothing and struggled to provide food, shelter, and educational opportunities. Even in 60’s and 70’s India they were poor. They received government subsidies for housing, food, and education in high school and college,. They were also helped by their extended families, He is happy to report that his siblings have fully recovered and are productive citizens. As a result of this struggle and its happy outcome, Rakesh is fulfilling his responsibility to give back.

Communications Committee
Jodi Kreider, Committee Chair, reported that the committee’s purpose was:
Rotary Club of Lancaster The Transmitter October 18, 2023
• Build Community Awareness
• Foster a Positive Image of our Club
• Support Membership Growth & Retention
• Improve Member Relations
The committee’s responsibilities include The Transmitter, external publicity and promotion, public relations, the website and social media.
Past accomplishments include a display at the Barnstormers, an article in the Central Penn Business Journal, publicity for WW&5K, and posting on Facebook. The Rotary Club of Lancaster logo merchandise is available to help to networks with peers.
The Transmitter needs your input on when and what to include and when to remove it. We can only help you if you tell us what you need.
Our goals are to work more closely with other committees, add a person to create and manage a LinkedIn account, and update the website. If you are having a problem using the website, try the Site Directory at:
