Combating illiteracy has been a focus of Rotary International since 1986 - and for good reason. UNESCO estimates there are 862 million illiterate adults in the world and about two thirds of them are women. Millions more are functionally illiterate, without the reading and writing skills necessary for everyday life. The United Nations has identified illiteracy as a major obstacle to economic, political, and social development.

Sergeant at Arms Andrea Sampson welcomed back Fabio who is looking forward to being a Debutante partner on Friday night. Andrea introduced President John Hunt who welcomed members and guests, including visiting Rotarian Frank Monger from Mount Gambier West and Mick Mitchell, a guest of Alan Bowes. He announced that Terry O'Neill's mother had passed away and expressed our sympathy to Terry. He also announced that Janet Blackley had recently completed a Rotary Leadership course and that several 3 day courses will be conducted soon.

President John Hunt interviewed Marie Bennett, President Elect for 2014-15.

Marie described her many interests, starting with managing a sheltered workshop producing paper and packaging, followed by a position with the Royal Agricultural Society conducting the Cattle section. Marie also arranged field days and workshops for farmers all over Victoria. She has learnt to speak Spanish and German, and organised medical conferences for large groups. Marie has been involved with the University of the Third Age, covering a variety of subjects. She was on a Federal Committee supervising grants for the Centenary of Federation. Marie taught English and managed an overseas mail order company amongst other things. Marie said she had a brother in Rotary and her grand-daughter had been an Exchange Student and this influenced her to join Rotary.

President John thanked Marie for her interesting interview and then closed the meeting.

Make a 45% solution of salt. Soak peanuts in this solution for several hours, then dry thoroughly.

 

Mix together 1 part Rosoap and 6 parts Pine Oil.
