Helping Hands - From One Country to AnotherTijuana Home BuildReaching across international boundaries is something Rotary does. And helping less fortunate families is something Rotary does very well. Recently, a group of about 25 Rotarians from two of the Escondido clubs traveled to Mexico to build a house for one of those families, and we did it in one day. The project was a joint effort organized by Project Mercy. Manpower and funding was provided by the Escondido Sunrise and Escondido After 5 clubs, with the Mexicali Rotary Club also helping in the construction. From our club Jeff Weber, Richard Macaluso, Craig Laursen and Doug Clark participated in another rewarding visit on the outskirts of Tijuana. Past-President Craig Laursen reported that the weather was cool and it drizzled a bit, but we completed their home, gave them the keys, wished them well and got home about 9:00 that evening. It was muddy after the rain last week, but not too bad. The mother and her daughter actually helped quite a bit by painting trim boards. We all did a variety of jobs during the day, fortunately there were a number of young men who helped with the heavy lifting. One family at a time. It was a blessing to be able to help. |

Welcome to Our Newest Members!Escondido Rotary After-5 Adds Two More To Our GroupAt our regular meeting on May 3rd we had the pleasure of inducting two new Rotarians to our club. Meet Kela Sconce and Max Whitson. Kela comes to us after moving around the country and deciding she wanted to trade the rainy weeks in Oregon for a little sunshine in So. Cal. Kela has her degree in Healthcare Management and is currently the AR supervisor for the Mentor Network, a national network of health care services for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She comes to us with the classification of Supervisor/Healthcare. Max returns to his hometown of Escondido after spending years in the corporate world and deciding to head out on a new path in real estate. Max even bought the home he grew up where he raises his young daughter and soon-to-be new addition in August. Dr. Cooper had the honor of inducting these two, forcing them to put up with his antics and posing for a picture above where you can see he was the most excited individual of the group. Congratulations to Kela and Max, we know you are going to be great additions to our club! |

Great food, great friends and some exceptional auction items made this year's event a wonderful success. Thank you to all involved, for all your help and endless hours of dedication. Our club could not do all the great things we do without the cooperation of all. Final numbers are not in but will be announced once we have the totals. Here are some pictures of some of our attendees and our auction items.

Helping Hands - From One Country to AnotherTijuana Home Build![]() Reaching across international boundaries is something Rotary does. Manpower and funding was provided by the Escondido Sunrise and Escondido After 5 clubs, with the Mexicali Rotary Club also helping in the construction. As the keys to their new home were given to them, Sofia, with her grandchildren Elizabeth, David and Samantha stood in disbelief and joy. Food items and toys for the kids were given to the family as well. This was a very gratifying experience for those of us who were able to help, but we should all be proud as Rotarians to be a part of this effort. It is only one example of how we are striving to fulfill the goal of this year’s theme – “Rotary Serving Humanity”.
