C-SPAN City Tours

Intro: Rotarian Peter Booth Topic: C-SPAN has embarked on a special programming and education outreach initiative: Working with our cable partners, the 2015 Cities Tour takes C-SPAN2’s Book TV and C-SPAN3’s American History TV programming on the road. We’re traveling to selected cities to feature the history and literary life of these communities. Grand Junction has been selected to participate. Bio: Ashley Hill is a ten-year veteran of the TV industry. Ashley travels the country producing programming and speaking on behalf of the C-SPAN Networks. Ashley’s previous work includes producer roles in her home state of West Virginia and Ohio, where she helmed programming based on travel and tourism, cooking, and the wild animals housed at the Columbus Zoo. When not having adventures around the U.S., Ashley is an avid record collector and vintage shopper, and enjoys spending time with her French bulldog Zelda. |

Intro: Rotarian Peter Booth Topic: Habitat for Humanity of Mesa County founded in 1991 has never experienced more growth than in the last couple years. Under the direction of their new executive director, Habitat’s grant approvals, corporate builds, acquisitions, and homeowners has never been more successful. Bio: Jennifer Grossheim Harris has held positions in the marketing and public relations field for corporate, government, and non-profit businesses for over 20 years. She currently serves as the Director of Marketing for Habitat for Humanity of Mesa County. Her responsibilities include the oversight of all digital media, development of corporate and private donors, event planning, sales promotions, public relations awareness and advertising. She has been a Rotarian for over 16 years and was first sponsored into Rotary by her father who has been a Rotarian over 40 years. |

CMU's Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative

Topic: Colorado Mesa University is proud to join ten other universities in the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative; a five year grant initiative to promote and strengthen principle-based ethics in business decision-making. The Department of Business is excited to lead the initiative highlighting the importance of business ethics for both students and businesses. Bio: Dr. Bridge is a Professor of Finance/Economics and the Department Head for Business at CMU. She received her PhD from the University of Wyoming and her MA and undergraduate degree from Chadron State College. Developing literacy in both Economics and Finance is a key focus for her and areas in which she thoroughly enjoys teaching. Brian Fraser is an Assistant Professor of Finance and the Director of the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative at Colorado Mesa University. Additionally, he is a Marine Corps veteran and an alumni of Colorado Mesa University and the University of Denver. Prior to joining CMU as a full-time faculty member, Brian was a commercial underwriter at US Bank. |

Grand Valley BMX Growth

Intro: Topic: Growing in the Grand Valley community is new Mesa County Fairgrounds BMX Complex. Learn about the Olympic sport of BMX racing, the new track, and the Mile High National Supercross Race coming to Grand Junction August 21-23. Bio: Nick Adams who took over a weed-covered patch of ground at the Mesa County Fairgrounds in 2006 and turned it into the top BMX track in Colorado in its second season. Nick, his wife Kristi, and sons Steven and Spencer have been running the track for the past nine years, and they are working with Mesa County to build a new and improved track for our community – one that will host athletes ranging from Olympians to a 3 year-old just learning how to ride on two wheels. Nick now works for USA BMX, and Steven (an Alumni of RYLA and former rotary youth Exchange student) has signed with the Colorado Mesa University Cycling team, with scholarships for academics as well as BMX. |

Update on the 114th Congress

Intro: Rotarian Rose Pugliese Topic: Congressman Tipton will discuss the 114th congress and issues affecting the Grand Junction area. Additionally, he will talk about the Trade Promotion Authority and discuss his views on the EPA and its rules and regulations. Bio: Congressman Scott Tipton was raised in Cortez and graduated from Ft. Lewis College in Durango. He became the first person in his family to earn a college degree. After three decades of running a small business, Scott was elected as a Republican to the Colorado House of Representatives for the 58th District in November of 2008. Scott was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010 and is serving in his third term. In the 114th Congress, Scott continues to represent the many interests of one of the most diverse and geographically vast districts in the nation. He is serving on the House Committee on Financial Services, and is a Vice Chair of the Congressional Western Caucus. |

Topic: The Business Intelligence Center (BIC) in the Colorado Secretary of State’s office seeks to make public data more easily accessible to help businesses make more-informed decisions. One of the key ways BIC meets this mission is through Go Code Colorado, a civic app challenge that engages developers and entrepreneurs to create apps that use public data to solve business problems. Bio: Speaking today about this unique program is Andrew Cole, the Program Manager for the BIC. Andrew has extensive public policy experience including time working for elected officials in the legislative and executive branches on both the State and Federal level. Andrew earned a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from Regis University and a Master of Arts in International Commerce and Policy from George Mason University. |

Performance Based Learning

Intro: TBD Topic: School District 51 is transforming to better prepare kids to in the globally competitive, high-tech world that awaits them upon graduation. The Industrial Age model of education that pushed information to students on a conveyer belt at the pace it would take most, but not all, students is outdated. In order to prepare the next generation of students for a workforce that values creative thinking over manual labor, School District 51 is a transforming to an Information Age model. Over the coming years, instruction will be more tailored to each learner through a performance-based system that honors mastery over seat time. Curriculum will be delivered through multiple means, including technology suited to the 21st Century learning experience. Aging facilities will be updated to handle more devices and increased internet bandwidth use. We are excited to share the details of this transformation. Bio: Steven Schultz, Superintendent for District #51, is a member of the Grand Junction Rotary. Originally a native of New Mexico, Steve has been an educator for more than 34 years. He has Bachelor degrees in Biology and Elementary Education as well as a Master degree in School Administration. Steve served as an elementary classroom teacher, for which he received the Governor's Excellence in Education Award. He has also served as a Feeder System Executive Cluster Director and as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction in District #51. As Assistant Superintendent, Steve served as the point person for implementing the Pathway to Peak Performance and the Performance-Based Policy for the District. Both initiatives have prepared him for the current performance-based project that we will hear about today. In July of 2009, he assumed the position of Superintendent of Schools for School District #51. |

Tortoises, Turtles and Boobies in the Galapagos

Intro: TBD Topic: When Charles Darwin came ashore from The Beagle onto the Galapagos Islands in 1835 he was fascinated by the variety of plants and animals which inspired him to author his seminal work, Origin of the Species. Today, due mostly to the intervention of humans, these species are dwindling and now need human intervention to be saved from extinction. Lynn will share her experience helping to restore and preserve habitat for endemic species of turtles, tortoises and boobies. Bio: After raising her son Alex and retiring from a thirty five year career in sales and marketing management she now trots the globe with her husband Dan. Most recently they travelled to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands where they participated in a program with Conservation Volunteers International. |

Young Chautauqua Performers

Intro: Susan Hall Topic: In its 10th year; Two Rivers Chautauqua has excelled at bringing to the Grand Valley a very unique tradition. Chautauqua is where historians give us the chance to interact with real characters from our past. As part of this program, students from elementary school through high school are given the chance to personalize history and immerse themselves in the historical past, all in front of a live audience at the annual Chautauqua event held at Cross Orchards Historical Site. This year’s event is September 18th and 19th. Bio: Leading the Young Chautauqua program is Susan Hall, a retired teacher, a former Board Member for Colorado Humanities and a co-founding of Two Rivers Chautauqua. Coming with Susan and to perform for us is Davis Sleigh, a 5th Grader from Pomona Elementary School and Katie Hartter, an 8th Grade home school student. Katie will join us as Florence Nightingale while Davis will be Wyatt Earp. |

Mesa County’s Economic Development Competitive Analysis, Grand Junction High School Interact

Intro: Rotarian Mike Lowenstein will be introducing the leader of the Grand Junction High School Interact. Rotarian Peter Booth will introduce Kristi Pollard, Executive Director of Grand Junction Economic Partners. Topic: Grand Junction Economic Partners has recently completed an Economic Development Competitive Analysis for Mesa County. The intent is to develop a plan of attack for creating new jobs in Mesa County. Bio: Kristi Pollard is the new Executive Director for the Grand Junction Economic Partnership (GJEP), a non-profit consortium of business, community and governmental leaders striving to create greater economic vitality for Mesa County. GJEP is the official economic development council for Mesa County and provides a one-stop shop for relocating and expanding businesses. Prior to her time with GJEP, Kristi was the principal owner of P², LLC, a local consulting firm that assisted a diverse group of non-profits and small businesses with public relations, marketing, event planning and fund-raising. As a professional who grew up in Western Colorado, Kristi understands the importance of collaboration with her neighbor and recognizes that her word is the most valuable thing in her possession. Kristi has served on the board of the March of Dimes for two years. Kristi and her husband Tim are the parents of three energetic boys who are their life’s passion. She enjoys long-distance running, hiking, skiing and boating in her free time. |

District Governor Presentation

Intro: Rotarian Jennifer Harris. Topic: District Governor Presentation Bio: Bob Delavan grew up in New Jersey and moved to Colorado when he attended the University of Denver and earned a degree in Business Administration in 1965. Upon graduation he was employed briefly by United Airlines prior to serving in the U.S. Army with the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam. After completing his service, Bob enjoyed occupations as a residence hall food service manager and owning and operating a retail hardware store. Currently Bob owns and manages Investment Planning Solutions as a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor. Bob began his service in Rotary in September of 1999 and was active as a membership committee member with Grand Junction Horizon Sunrise Rotary. He served as club president in 2003-2004 and served as club membership committee chair for many years. Bob has served as District 5470 Assistant Governor, a member of multiple committees, a Multi-District PETS facilitator, and District Membership Chair. Bob is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow as well as a Rotary Foundation Major Donor and Paul Harris Society member. Bob is humbled and honored to serve as District 5470 District Governor in 2015-2016. Bob met his wife Jill at the University of Denver and they have been married for 47+ years. They raised two sons and they are the proud grandparents of two grandchildren. When Bob has some spare time he enjoys cooking, fly fishing, and woodworking. |

Bio: Mr. Goertz graduated from the University of Arizona with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1988. He possesses twenty-six years of professional experience, twenty-four with Capco, Inc. His experience includes all elements of manufacturing operations and he has been director of operations for the past eighteen years overseeing a 150+ person manufacturing environment. Mr. Goertz currently serves as the Chair of the Western Colorado Manufacturing Alliance as well as the Industry Advisory Council for the CMY/CU Engineering program. |

Next Wednesday, October 21st will be a day to remember for Rotarians. The Rotary day will start with our regular meeting at Two Rivers. Our speaker will be Eric Goertz of the Colorado Advance Manufacturing Alliance. Then in the evening the casual fun time starts. The staff of Two Rivers is hosting a social event for Rotarians and Significant Others at the Avalon. The party runs from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM and includes hor d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Come to both the noon meeting and the evening party for a satisfying Rotary day. See you there. |

The Club can be very proud of the work we all do with The Rotary Foundation. We regularly are the top giving Club in the District, with all those funds going to a great cause. The Rotary Foundation transforms our gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. Through this charitable arm of Rotary, we tap into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. We hope to keep up this good work well into the future. Here it to speak to us today about The Rotary Foundation is Mike Klingbiel, the Assistant Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator. Mike comes from Rock Island, Illinois and graduated from Colorado State University. His career has been in the technology field working with Denver based Lewan & Associates, EMC and Cisco before starting his own firm—The Pinnacle Group. Mike is a third generation Rotarian and joined the Denver Southeast Club in January of 2004. He is currently serving as Assistant Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator (ARRFC). He has served in a number of other capacities since joining Rotary, including Fund Raising Chairman, Club President 2007-2008, Assistant Governor for Area 2 for District 5450 and past District Governor for 5450 in 2012-2013. He was awarded Rotarian of the Year by his Club in 2006 and received the Rotary International District 5450 Governor’s Discretionary Award in 2005-2006. Mike and his wife Treva are Major Donors to Rotary Foundation, Bequest Society members, and Paul Harris Society members. In addition, their children, Matt and Ashley are Paul Harris Fellows and have traveled with Mike to Africa to work in Kibera and Rwanda. |

Returning Rotary Youth Exchange Students

Our Club is proud to participate with the Rotary Youth Exchange program by both hosting students coming to Grand Junction and sponsoring students from here going abroad. Today, we are honored to hear from the two students our Club sponsored last year. They are both going to share their experience and what they learned as an exchange student. Amy Bergen spent her year in France. Amy enjoys hiking and especially Kayaking. She is now a Senior at Grand Junction High School and plans to attend CMU. Meanwhile, Alex Perry went to Poland for her year abroad. She is now attending CMU, but is planning on studying abroad. She is an avid skier, likes to hike up the mountains in summer and ski down them in the winter. |

District 51 Criminal Justice Services, Advocacy, Outreach and Connections

Intro: Rotarian Steve Schultz Topic: A significant increase of marijuana use in Mesa County, especially among the youth, has sparked a community-based collaboration between several agencies to address the issue. The Mesa County Drug Oversight Taskforce is composed of representatives from the Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Health Department, Partners, CASA, Hilltop, School District #51, and more. The Task Force especially wants to impress it upon the community the negative use among children. Bio: Speaking on recent trends of drug use are Jennifer Sheetz and Susana Wittrock, both with Mesa Valley School District #51. Jennifer is the Criminal Justice Data Analyst for the District Attorney's Office and Criminal Justice Services Department and the co-chair of the DTOC. Susana’s role with the school district is to support students who are struggling with substance use. This is accomplished by identifying individual student needs and planning towards appropriate services. She has participated with the Drug Oversight Taskforce as a representative of the School District 51. |

High Desert Opera’s The Music Man

This New Year's Eve, High Desert Opera here in Grand Junction is presenting "The Music Man," a fully-staged production and with a live orchestra. “The Music Man” is one of the great classic Broadway shows from the 1950's which people love for its wonderful music and all American message. Some of the famous songs from the show are: Seventy six trombones, We Got Trouble, Till There Was You, and Goodnight My Someone. James Werner is speaking to us today about “The Music Man” performance, High Desert Opera and possible sing a few songs from the show. James has been a professional singer and actor all of his adult life with roles both on Broadway and with many opera houses throughout the US. He moved to Grand Junction in 1998 and made a decision to start an opera company here after teaching vocal technique for a few years. He saw the need for people to have more opportunity to perform in front of live audiences with an orchestra and professional standards. High Desert Opera will be presenting “The Music Man” at 7:30 December 31st and 1:30 & 7:30 January 2nd, all in Robinson Theatre at Colorado Mesa University. |

Normandy France

Topic: On June 6,1944, Normandy became for every etched in America’s collective memory when 6,939 vessels carried 156,000 Allied troops across the English Channel and landed them in France. By July 24th, that number had swollen to 1,331,000. This opened up the long-anticipated Western Front in the fight against Hitler and Germany. Though successful, it came with the cost of 209,000 Allied casualties in the overall Battle for Normandy, 125,847 of those being American. Past September, fellow-Rotarian Jack Connelly and his wife Anne traveled to Paris and then spent two days touring the Normandy area, including the American Cemetery where 9,387 US soldiers were laid to rest. His program details his experience at the war memorial, beaches, museums and grounds. Bio: Jack Connolly has been a member of the Grand Junction Rotary Club for 34 years. Jack served as President 2000-2001, chaired the Robin Hood Committee, the Golf Committee, the GSE Committee and served on the Board of Directors for 5 years. He is a multiple Paul Harris fellow, donating funds to honor Anne Connolly, Dale Hollingsworth and Brian Mahoney as Paul Harris Fellows.

Putting The Community Into Community Solar

Intro: Rotarian Dick Pryor. Topic: Commitment to the community is a fundamental part of Grand Valley Power’s (GVP) mission. With the help of several national and local partners, GVP recently energized the nation’s first community solar facility dedicated to serving low-income consumers. Tom Walsh will talk about project-from concept to construction-and the impact it could have. Bio: Tom Walch is the General Manager of GVP, a local electric distribution utility that has been in businesses here for 80 years. GVP serves over 18,000 meters in Mesa County. Tom has been with the company for four years. He is a recovering attorney having practiced law back in his home state of Texas prior to entering the utility business fifteen years ago. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Rural Electric Association, and a president of the Colorado Statewide Managers Association. Here is Grand Junction, he serves on the GJEP Board of Directors and on the CMU Mechanical Engineering Industrial Advisory Committee. |
