District & Club Events
President Jo spoke about some events coming up - the District Board Meeting and the YEP camp next weekend. The Thriving Club Workshop is on February 14th and Vicki and Jo will be attending.
Hannah Murray
We send our very best wishes to Hannah, 
our Youth Director, who is recovering at home following complications from a C-section. Hannah is resting, on antibiotics, and slowly regaining strength. She sends her love to everyone - she’s missing the club and looks forward to being back when she’s able.
We also send our congratulations to Hannah and Rob. Malia is gorgeous and we can't wait to meet her.
Outreach Packs
The DV refuge has again reached out requesting more outreach packs, reflecting the continued demand for support in our community. Supplies have been ordered, and a packing day will be advised in the next newsletter. Members are encouraged to get involved.
Fundraising Highlights
Our recent Bunnings BBQ was a great success, raising $1700 for club projects. Another barbecue is scheduled for next Friday, with sign-up opportunities available. Thanks to everyone who gave their time last time and hope you can give some time on February 6th.
Domestic & Family Violence Initiatives
Our guests, Dave and Robii Harmon spoke about their club's journey with the Rotary Domestic and Family Violence campaign that began in Ballina six years ago. The campaign’spurple shirts have become a strong and recognisable symbol of awareness and action.
The club funds care packs for women and children fleeing domestic violence, each valued at approximately $100. These packs include essential vouchers for food, fuel, and daily needs, with Rotary’s support clearly acknowledged.
Their club supports the Love Bites respectful relationships program by funding facilitator training and resources, helping establish long-term partnerships with schools.
Duck Race Impact
Michael talked about our Duck Race, the importance of member engagement on the day and how the funds raised are distributed. Please contact one of the committee members if you would like to help out this year.
Recognition & International Connections
The club was honoured to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from Macleod Refuge, thanking members for their generous Duck Race support.
Members were also advised of an exciting international opportunity: a reception with the King and Queen of Denmark in March. Ten places have been secured for visiting Danish students.
Dee From Swell Sculpture Festival spoke about her privilege in addressing the club and shared her connection to Rotary through hosting an exchange student. She provided an overview of Swell, founded in Carrumbin in 2003, which has grown from 30 artworks and a few thousand visitors into a major independent cultural event. Dee reflected on her own journey from volunteer coordinator to Executive Director and outlined Swell’s purpose: supporting sustainable careers for artists and strengthening community connection through public art. A video testimonial highlighted Swell’s impact on local and emerging artists and its role in shaping the Gold Coast’s cultural identity. Dee also shared the festival’s strong economic contribution, with a Net Promoter Score of 81, making it a world-class event, and $7.4 million injected into the local economy in 2024. She highlighted the volunteer program and invited Rotary to explore future collaboration opportunities.
