Message from President Madeleine
Can you help grow our club?
This has been a great year for our club. Covid didn’t destroy us. Our ability to serve our community and our world is undiminished - and our Rotary connections make it possible for our efforts to have so much greater impact and greater reach.
You probably know someone, or more than one, who you’d like to see in Rotary - who would thank you for the nudge.
Please help them make the decision, fill out the form with them over coffee, introduce them to Jo-anne.
Please do it now, while the idea is fresh, and before the summer rush.
Let’s spread the benefit of this great club!
Adult Literacy Committee Update
Janet Lane and Steacy Pinney
The relationship between Rotary Calgary and various literacy organizations has been strong for decades. As you roll up your sleeves and volunteer for the Calgary Reads Big Book Sale on May 12-22, remember:
Literacy is the capacity to read, to understand and to apply what has been read in daily life, work and learning. Literacy is the most important skill to learn, as first we learn to read; then we read to learn. Literacy informs, inspires, entertains, transports, transforms and can be a source of joy. And for those who cannot read well, life is hard. Too many Albertans have low or poor literacy skills.
Many of our Rotarians are currently working alongside the hundreds of Calgarian who are preparing for the upcoming sale of thousands of gently used books. WHY? Because we believe in Early Childhood Literacy!
After 8 years of overseeing projects in Cambodia, Manon Mitchell will be sharing her expertise at both District Conference and the RI International Convention in Melbourne Australia.
On Tuesday April 25, Bruce Fenwick and his team presented a wonderfully uplifting celebration of the legacy of James Wheeler Davidson, “Water Changes Everything”. Upon arriving guests were felt immediately transported by the music of Anastasia on violin and the wonderfully welcoming team of Lisa, Eric and Doug.
We are very excited to announce that the Rotary SIS Charity Golf Classicis back in action September 11th, 2023! This year we’ll enjoy the course at the Glencoe Golf & Country Club.
The Top 70 Over 70 program honours the wonderful contributions that seniors make to our community. The program began in 2017 and celebrates the achievements of seniors with a Gala at the Hyatt every two years. This year’s event will be held October 23.
Our Club was instrumental in helping to launch the program and has been the source of many nominations, as well as significant supporters of the event itself.
The Major Donations Committee is recommended to the Board that the following project be approved:
Development and implementation of an emergency food app Collaborative: (NSTEP is the “fiscal agent’) contribute $25,000 towards the $80,000 budget for the development, testing and implementation of an emergency food app. The contribution is contingent on the procurement of the other $55,000 from other Rotary Clubs and community partners.
All Club Members Should Volunteer for Big Book Sale!
The Calgary Reads Big Books Sale is a CLUB-WIDE service project requiring ALL Rotarians to participate in some way. There are many shifts available, and we NEED YOU to get involved. It is your commitment as a Rotarian to be engaged and this event provides that wonderful opportunity to work alongside members of the public and make a difference.
Thanks to Garth Toombs for suggesting many interesting ideas for COG articles.
We would love to hear more about:
a) what happens at meetings. Create a short 200 word summary of the latest meeting. (Garth said he'd be part of a team to report on Tuesday meetings)
b) let's find out who has specific interests: are you a cyclist? a hiker? a swimmer? do you go kayaking/canoeing? Are you a secret chef!
c) let us know what you are currently reading (this could be as simple as write a short article with titles our Rotarians have provided)
d) Congrats & Sad section - who has some great exciting news? Who has sad news to share and get support. Just be the person to whom these items can be emailed and put them together when things come up
e) Write up a short biography (no more than 400 words) about each of our board members.
Thanks Garth for these wonderful ideas (and more). Now we just need Rotarians to STEP UP and offer their time (it doesn't take long) to participate in making our COG more vibrant and informative.
