Highlights of the November 17, 2015 Meeting
By Andrea Serink
The meeting was held at the Calgary Golf and Country Club. We began with a moment of silence to recognize the tragedy in Paris. Michael played the piano and Julie Visser provided a heartfelt invocation emphasizing that we as Rotarians are committed to continuing to lead by example, promoting peace and good will both locally and globally.
Peter Blanchard, Vice President of Prairie Merchant Corp
By Andrea Serink
Peter started off by explaining his title at Prairie Merchant Corporation is Vice President, Finance and Fun. The company is Brett Wilson's private investment bank, which finances key personal investments in five major areas - energy, agriculture, real estate, entertainment and sport. Some of these include: First Energy Capital Corp, Bolt Supply Limited, Maxim Power Corp, Canoe Financial, Rally Pointe, Forent Energy and Prairie Strathmore.
I would like to advise all RCC members about a decision of the Board of Directors on Wednesday, November 18th regarding our Stay in School (SIS) Program. After due consideration and evaluation of all the work completed by the SIS Committee directed at mitigating risk, the Board voted unanimously to support the ongoing operation and administration of the program within the club. This means that we will not be pursuing an external partnership to support this program at this time . It was felt that this program is too important to the identity of our club and the engagement of members to allow the management of the program to be outsourced. For clarity, the Rotary Tom Jackson Stay in School Program team is continuing to explore the possibility of an external partnership since the needs and approach for that program are different from those of the Stay in School Program.
Many refugees from Syria are facing the prospect of a cold winter in Jordan in refugee camps. Ghada Alatrash and Barbra Young are collecting winter jackets, boots, blankets and socks to be sent to the Refugees to help them stay warm. If you have any you can contribute, please either bring them to a Rotary lunch or call Ghada (587-581-3730) or Barb Young (403-286-7228) to arrange an alternative delivery point.
