Lovely Christmas Party
Manon Mitchell
As we drove down the lane leading to the Calgary Golf & Country Club, we were transported to a magical place with all the lovely lights adorning the massive trees. We received a warm welcome from members of the Fellowship committee and cocktail hour was enjoyed with the music of Michael Pierson on piano, William Friedson on flute and myself on violin.
Our MC for the evening was President Nominee Doug Webb and we were treated to a traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings as well as Christmas pudding for desert. Lorelei Higgins read a wonderful story, "The Giving Tree" and everyone participated in our singing of the Rotary 12 Days of Christmas ... who can forget "5 Global Grants". Spirits were high and the winner of the Westjet trip for 2 was selected from the 200 tickets sold. Congratulations to Madeleine King and Bon Voyage!
Many thanks to our Fellowship committee under the leadership of Dennis Tran!
It was truly a magical evening enjoyed by many Rotarians and the wonderful guests.
“Live, Love, Learn, and Leave a Legacy” is the mantra that defines Trevor Ironside’s life. Renowned for his tireless philanthropic work, Trevor has made significant contributions through organizations like One Child’s Village, Medical Mercy Canada, and as the International Director for the Rotary Club of Calgary Downtown (RCCD).
“There are more than 2,000 charities to join in Calgary, but few offer what our Rotary club does. Yes, we have inspiring people, experience, and financial resources, but most importantly, we have a trustworthy global network of 35,000 Rotary clubs eager to collaborate with us and make the world a better place,” Trevor says, underscoring the unique value of RCCD.
Sean joined the Rotary Club of Calgary to establish professional contacts and to help do something for those less fortunate. He has excelled in both areas, leading to his current appointment as Youth Director. You may know Sean as a Portfolio Manager and Wealth Advisor, a colleague with the Stay in School Program or as a hockey teammate. Sean likes to stay busy.
On Saturday December 7th, we were treated to an informative Zoom session about a project whose advisor is our own Doug McMillan.
Building Empowered Families, Growing Futures: Improving Maternal and Infant Care in East Africa aims to improve maternal and new born health in Uganda and is one of the finalists of Rotary's Program of Scale, a grant valued at $2 million USD.
Find out more by viewing the short presentation by clicking here.
Please contact Doug McMillan if you have any questions or wish to discuss this project.
Our World Community Services committee is grateful for the work of Walley Temple's life changing project in Guatemala to eliminate cervical cancer. Doug McMillan's project in Uganda is another large scale life changing project. We are blessed to have both these gentlemen in our club, leading the charge on the world stage when it comes to two Rotary's 7 Areas of Focus: Maternal and Child Health and Disease Prevention.
Our Club's New Website
Manon Mitchell
For the last couple of months, our small team of communicators has been working with the staff at Atlas Agency in the creation of a new club website. Watch in the new year for our lovely new site which will provide all the information anyone may want to know about our club. The eye-catching design and clear overview of our club's activities aim to inspire the public to attend our events and discover more about Rotary and our mission. Once the site is live, we'll refine the member area to highlight essential resources for our members. Stay tuned!
When is the COG published?
Manon Mitchell
The COG, the electronic newsletter informing our members of our club's activities and interesting articles, is published approximately every 2 weeks, usually (but not always) the week when we do not have an inperson club meeting. We'd love to send it weekly but it takes about 6 hours to put together so every other week will have to do.
If you'd like to have us publish an article or have an idea about what we should be publishing, please forward your ideas to Manon or Diane by the FRIDAY before the Tuesday publication date.
You are also welcome to contact either Manon or Diane to discuss any idea you may have.
Here are this year's publication dates:
Jan 7, 21
Feb4, 18
Mar 4, 18
Apr 1, 15, 29
May 6, 20
June 3, 17
If you enjoy reading the COG, let us know because your comments are the only way we know we are hitting the mark and it is our reward!
