Greeter this week: Jim Ferguson

As I write this Greeter's message, it's currently Thanksgiving Day in Canada.
What do we have to be thankful for?
Easy. It's friends, family, love, health, Rotary, ....... the list is endless.
Another thing to be thankful for is our freedom, something that we don't always really think about, and sometimes take for granted living in Canada.
My son, Ryan, and I share a love for music, and have travelled to and attended many concerts over the years.
Growing up, Ryan learned how to play guitar, played in bands, still plays multiple musical instruments, and also collects music, amplifiers, guitars, concert posters, etc.
He showed me a very interesting record that he was able to acquire from a Russian friend.
It was from the days of the Cold War, when the Soviet Union clamped down on any music or art coming out of the West that officials deemed decadent or culturally corruptive.
An underground culture sprang up, where Russian youths anxious for western music, used old x-rays from hospitals to copy smuggled music and then usually sold it, or gave it away to their friends.
Ryan's "bone record" is of a song called Domani Cosa Sara, and it actually wasn't a bad recording, considering it's on a Russian hospital x-ray!
I hope that you enjoy this week's Speaker Program on the "bone records" and enjoy your freedom, something to be truly thankful for.

Inspirational Moment

In Indonesia, commuters pay for the bus with plastic waste
RESIDENTS of Indonesia's second largest city Surabaya can now pay for the bus in a novel way - by trading in used plastic.
The city's mayor Tri "Risma" Rismaharini last month announced the roll out of the new Suroboyo Bus, comfortable, air-conditioned buses which are, importantly, accessible for disabled, elderly and pregnant passengers.
While the buses might be shiny and new, passengers are invited to pay for their rides not just with money, but with plastic they turn in at designated bus stops and recycling stations around the city.

Attended a joined meeting of 3 e-clubs in the UK. 35 People from all around the world attended. Great presentation and fellowship!
Peter Denooy, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

I would like to record members with a "live" greeting and also with a live Four-Way Test.  It would be very nice for members to actually view other members "live."  Just a thought.
Kitty Bucsko, Rotary E-Club of the Caribbean, D-7020

Why the hospital of the future will be your own home; Niels van Namen (Oct 1-7)
Going through a medical situation now I appreciate the speaker's views on being attended to in your home and not a hospital or clinic.  It is a much better solution.

Sharon Blaker, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

Very interesting program.  Not that long ago my Mom had a serious stroke and fortunately we were in the position to be able for her to spend her final months in her own home; what a huge difference from other experiences I've had. Not sure how that could be possible for others but it is a great conversation to start having especially as us baby boomers get inevitably older!
John Wojcicki, RC of Edmonton, D-5370
