One of the nicest things about Rotary, is the opportunities we have to attend a Rotary meeting, event or celebrations in any part of the world.
After 18 years in Rotary, Ramiro and I have visited many clubs worldwide, and during my term as DG, we traveled through our entire district, getting to know many Rotarians, many of which we call our friends.
Some of those friends are past District Governors, with whom we stay in contact and enjoy Rotary Fellowship whenever possible. One such occasion was on Thursday, June 19, when 2013-14 Governor Betty presented 2014-15 Governor Linda with her Governor’s pin.
With their speeches, they both inspired the audience, gathered at Northlands in Edmonton. The room was filled, with members from the host - Edmonton Northeast - club, home club of Governor Linda. Other guests where from the Edmonton Glenora Club home of Governor Betty, and several members of the G string (Governors past, current and future). DGE Tim Schilds and Sally even drove in from Dawson Creek. It was a pleasure seeing so many other guests, including Assistant Governors.
I am very proud of our District and was happy to share this occasion with so many of my Rotary friends.
Visit your District website and find out where you can attend a meeting or special event and encourage others to attend our e-meeting while away from home.

“I really enjoyed being greeted by incoming District Governor Linda Robertson.  She will be my District Governor for the coming Rotary year.
I enjoyed the Canada song played at the beginning of the meeting.  It was stirring!!
As I listened to the Fellowship Scholars talk about their Peace Conference that they went to, I especially enjoyed the one Rotarian who sang her comments:  "I dreamed of those... who put an end to war."
Harold Witte, RC Edmonton Northern Lights – D5370

“The Prime Minister of Australia gave not only a warm welcoming speech, but also, a major pledge for Polio Plus; Well done.

A Little Humor

Don't wash your hair in the shower!!
It's so good to finally get a health warning that is useful!!!
Shampoo Warning!
I don't know WHY I didn't figure this out sooner!
When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body, and printed very clearly on the shampoo label is this warning, "FOR EXTRA BODY AND VOLUME."
No wonder I have been gaining weight! Well! I got rid of that shampoo and I am going to start showering with Dishwashing Soap. Its label reads, "DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE."
Problem solved!

Together, we can eradicate polio, train more skilled peacemakers, and provide lasting solutions for communities fighting disease, hunger, illiteracy, and poverty.

Rotary Minute
Submitted by Chris Langley

Today I am moved by the news of the death of one of my mentors  at the age of 88, to contemplate the power, both in our lives and in the lives of others, of mentoring.

Bill was a collector with a truly remarkable collection of military aviation badges. I had the same hobby, but I heard that Bill had an Alladin's Cave and that he too lived in Vancouver. It took me a while to track him down, a bit longer to get him to talk to me, but once he saw my enthusiasm for the subject he opened his collection, his home and his mind to allow me in.

He both gave me access to the material knowledge, the material artifacts and to much of his aging network and this allowed me to continue to grow the knowledge base, providing an exciting springboard  from which to continue beyond his fading years. I am lucky in that my Grandfather was also like this and I suppose set the trend I have noticed in my life of  being mentored by older men. In retrospect there have been many men in my life who have given me their wisdom and their opinions around which to build my own.

Mentoring only works if it is offered and if it is paid attention to, but without offering it can never work. We all have things to offer to mentor in. We probably underestimate how many people would be happy to have a mentor.

As Rotarians we like to give help and assistance. Help and assistance is always easier to give when you can see what grows from it, but sometimes you cannot expect to see the results. There is a well known saying that a great person plants acorns so that their great-great-grandchildren can relax in the shade of a mighty oak. Great scientists who have changed our understanding are on record as saying "Don't give me all the praise. I didn't understand all this by myself. I have stood on the shoulders of great men and seen further" (Sir Isaac Newton).

Offer to mentor, in no matter what small way, because when a person dies, their assembled knowledge dies with them, unless it has been passed along, and that is surely a waste.
