As president for the new Rotary year of 2013-2014, and with great pleasure, I welcome members, friends and guests to the 20th weekly meeting of the only e-club in Canada. For our members: I hope you will find pride, inspiration and enthusiasm for Rotary and for what this e-club will accomplish because of your commitment to "service above self" as you attend our meeting this week. To our guests: I hope you will find a takeaway message that will translate into a renewed excitement for what your own Rotary experience is, and will remember your time with us when you next connect with your own Rotary Club and Rotary friends.
Inspirational Moment
Did you know Rotary International was a partner in the formation of the United Nations? Rotary's International Project is PolioPlus, for which it is acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system.
We might remember the words of Sir Winston Churchill as we Rotarians participate in the end to polio, and continue to be a major force in improving the life of millions, if not billions of people, everywhere, through "service above self":

“It was a terrific program. I heard the speaker "live" in Phoenix last year. I liked his ideas around our outdated education system. Our daughter was home-schooled for that reason; she didn't fit the square pegs of the existing system”.

“What a great program. Think it ended before final points were made but great insights to a big problem.”

“We really enjoyed the presentation on Bitone, since we had lived in Kampala Uganda. We as a couple also support a young boy in Uganda. We also belonged to the Rotary Club of Muyenga. We learned a lot about the Netherlands from the video”.

A Little Humour

As well as being PE, Bruce is a dentist. And he even insisted on having his way with the humour this week. He says, his mother always said "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit...but the pun is the highest". With this we take the high road:A man went to his dentist because he felt something wrong in his mouth. The dentist examined him and said: "That new upper plate that I put in six months ago is eroding. What you been eating?" The man replied “All I can think of is that about four months ago my wife made some asparagus and put some stuff on it that was delicious - Hollandaise sauce. I love it so much I now put it on everything - meat, toast, fish - everything!” “Well”, said the dentist “that's the problem. Hollandaise sauce is made lots of lemon juice, which is highly corrosive. It's eating away at your upper plate. I'll make you a new plate, and this time I'll use chrome.” “Why chrome?” asked the patient. The dentist replied “It's simple. Everyone knows that there's no plate like chrome for the Hollandaise!”
Rotary Minute
Polio has been forgotten by the current generations of first world people. Rotarians and their friends have travelled to India and Africa to perform volunteer immunizations. Rotarians have given generously to PolioPlus as the Rotary initiative is called. We have partnered with the likes of Bill Gates to the tune of $300m matched by Rotarians donations. Although one form has been annihilated Polio has mutated to new forms, which can be inoculated against only by injectable vaccine. Yet, we must maintain a focus and enthusiasm for the project. It is a challenge to maintain enthusiasm after 25 years of commitment. But on June 1 Rotarians and their friends renewed that commitment and acknowledged their need to finish what we have started. Thus, the flashmob in which PE Bruce participated and recorded in this video and which now has over 87,000 views. But that isn't easily enough. Add your vote to end polio by viewing what happened on a cloudy afternoon in Vancouver.
