Support Ileana Moreno, the Widow of Peter Denooy
On January 9th, 2020, Peter Denooy passed away from complications due to pancreatic cancer at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Canada. While we knew we did not have much time, we were all shocked when he slipped away from us so fast. At the moment of his passing, his loving partner Ileana cried out, “No Peter, No! You leave me all alone!” Her love for him was never more evident than in that moment of raw emotion.
For the last decade, Peter had spent more and more time in the Donimican Republic, eventually settling there in 2015 with Ileana and her two daughters, Guadeloupe and Nicole. Peter and Ileana met when she was his interpreter for the Wheelchair Project Peter spearheaded through the Rotary Club in Edmonton. This program saw Peter facilitate the delivery of used wheelchairs to those who needed them in the Dominican Republic, but had no hope of affording one on their own. This program helped many Dominican’s living with disability, and it sparked a beautiful relationship between Ileana and Peter.
In November of 2019, Peter returned to Edmonton due to his growing health concerns. Ileana was always patiently at his side, and as the situation worsened over the following months, she was at his hospital bed from morning until night. Her loving, caring presence was an immense comfort to Peter as he faced the news of his terminal illness.
