Greeter this week: Chris Langley

Hello, my name is Chris Langley. I am proud to be your greeter today. Welcome to the Rotary E-Club Canada One.  I joined Rotary in 1990 and remained with one club until a couple of years back. Later I was rewarded with Honorary Membership.  I was involved in International Service working on Youth Exchange, in various capacities, developing our relationship with our sister Club in Japan and as counselor for an Ambassadorial scholar from Germany. After a short break from Rotary, I heard about the E-Club. For me, this works!! I am happy that you are attending our meeting, whether as a member, or a visitor from near or far.

Rotary is one world with one purpose, Service Above Self. Service is about letting go of ones "self". A hard thing to achieve for many. It’s why Rotary is so needed in this world. Self is a function of experience, upbringing and attitude. Holding on to old versions of self can hinder being of service because service requires the ability to be versatile, adaptable, adventurous. We can get very stuck into doing things the same way because its the easiest hole to fall into. In our own way we continue in our small world unaware of a changing world, finding it hard to make changes.

So before you go further into our meeting, let me tell you a very quick story!

Years ago, I was bright, intelligent, inquisitive, driven, adventurous and a bit of a geek; Then something terrible happened............. I went to school.

Ever since, I have dreamed and written about education and purpose. My big dream was to find a way to change education, to get away from teaching dull  "curriculum" and forcing physics theorums, latin and academic history down kid's throats, and finding out what drove and inspired them and using that to educate them, allowing and encouraging them to explore and seek guidance.

Well, it seems that time is finally catching up on that idea. More and more people are not only understanding what limits our human growth, but have the guts to speak about it and actualize it. I may never live to see my dream fulfilled, but the young man presenting in our meeting today will take it all the way!

A Little Humor
Spanish Computer!
Submitted by Gord Lewis
A Spanish language teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.
"House" for instance, is feminine:     "la casa."
"Pencil," however, is masculine:       "el lapiz."

A student asked, "What gender is 'Computer'?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher divided the class into two groups, Male and Female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether "Computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun.
Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.
The men's group decided that  "Computer" should definitely be of the feminine gender
("la computadora"),  because:
1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and
 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck to buy accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine
("el computador"),  because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one,  you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

Rotary Minute
January is Rotary Awareness Month – a time to learn more about our organization. The more we're known for our good work, the more good work we'll be able to do.

Because of The Rotary Foundation, people around the world know that they can depend on Rotary in their time of need. And as Rotarians, it is our responsibility to understand and promote our Foundation and help keep it strong.

The most important responsibility we have is also the simplest: It is leading by example. We cannot ask Rotarians to make our Foundation a priority if we have not made it a priority ourselves, by making our own donation.
