Welcome to the E-meeting of the Rotary E-club of Western Canada

 Greeter this week: Al Bergsma
ImageHi and welcome to the Rotary E-club of Western Canada. We have been operating for a number of months now, and currently have 10 members. As e-clubs tend to be more international in nature than our regular terra clubs, it is only appropriate that we use various international terms of greeting. For example if we were in Texas it is likely that we would be greeted by a resounding "Howdy".  In Hawaii we would be welcomed with a flower lei and the greeting of "Aloha".  While attending a meeting in the tourist areas of Mexico we would be welcomed with a kiss on the cheek and the greeting, "Hola".  However when we attended this Rotary meeting of Kathmandu Central we were greeted with the words, "Namaste".  Namaste is not only a greeting, but a wish that you are at peace with yourself and those around you.  My wish for you today is to experience the peace of Namaste.

 Inspirational Moment

The happiness of life is made up of minute fractions—the little soon-forgotten charities of a kiss, a smile, a kind look, a heartfelt compliment in the disguise of a playful raillery, and the countless other infinitesimal of pleasurable thought and genial feeling.

ImageI am a little embarrassed about what happened the other day, but want to share it with you anyway, because I feel it’s a lesson we as Rotarians can all learn from.

Recently, I witnessed the induction of my friend of 25 year; I was so proud of her, but the thing that disturbed me, was the fact that I was not her sponsor. Another friend invited her to Rotary and received the honor of presenting her with the Rotary pin.

How did that happen? Of course, we did talk about Rotary every now and then, and I may have suggested: “Maybe you are interested in Rotary?” But since there was no enthusiastic response, I never followed up.

I admit, the timing may not have been right and she was probably not ready, but I could have invited her to breakfast with me, invite her to one of our events or community projects, give her my Rotary magazine, or send her little tidbits of Rotary information and clippings of my involvement. Well, I didn’t and I feel bad. But all is well, because she is now a member and I have the privilege of being her mentor.

So, friends, why not go through your list of friends and family members, whether in or out of town. Send them a message and a link to your favorite Rotary cub.  Better yet, when you are visiting friends or relatives this summer, why not do a make up in the area and ask them to come along; Introduce them to the club members and suggest that your guest may be a prospective member. Leave contact information with the club to follow up on.

So even if your friend of relative does not join your own club, they would certainly increase the number of Rotarians worldwide and that’s what counts.

Got to run now and call my other friend. She just retired and she is a Rotarian at heart, for sure.

Oh, and by the way. If they are unable to attend the traditional, or “terra” club in their area, there is always the Rotary E-cub of Western Canada.

Cheers…….. enjoy the meeting.

ROTARY Moment

Turn prospective members into Rotarians

In the last 10 years, more than 50,000 men and women have completed the Prospective Member form to find out how they could get involved in their local Rotary club.

Imagine how many more members we might attract if every club and district included a link to the form on their websites and Facebook pages.

“I’ve had 50 to 75 people complete the Prospective Member form in the past two years,” says Winston Connolly, membership development committee chair for District 7020 (Caribbean), whose district website includes a link to the form. “Many of them have gone on to become members.”   Read more

Vice President, Bruce on a Mission in China

As you read this, Rotary E-club of Western Canada's Vice President Bruce Kleeberger is participating in a cleft lip/palate medical misison to China from July 6 to 21. He is serving as the mission dentist. This is his third mission with the Rotary supported Alliance for Smiles organization.

Last Sunday,
Image Bruce arrived to Xiamen, China airport after a 12 hour flight, from Vancouver. There he joined the remainder of the 24 member team from around the world.

From China, Bruce writes us: "After a short 2 hour flight and 1 1/2 hour drive to Zhangzhou City, north of Shanghai, we were put u
p in excellent accommodation and began to prepare for our screening day, scheduled to begin first task on
Mo
Imagenday.
Each mission is different and presents varied challenges, and this one is no different. The extreme heat and humidity makes it difficult to move whenever outside. It also makes it difficult for our patients, some of whom come from as far as 200 km away, to see us.

We have now completed over 80 screenings for patients who would benefit from our services and completed over 20 procedures.
Thank you to all you have sent their messages of support and also to those who have made donations to this worthwhile cause".
