Rotary Roundtable

Opioids - Live or Die

The Rotary Club of Galena will host the annual Rotary Roundtable.  The topic is the opioid crisis, and we hope to get students from around Jo Daviess County to participate, along with health professionals, the business community, and interested citizens.

Over 47,000 Americans died from opioid overdoses in 2017 alone - the last year for which data is readily available, and the highest year of all time.  The number has grown each year, with less than 17,000 in 1999 growing to the 2017 total, with increases every single year and no sign or indication it will diminish in the coming years.

What is the "Opioid Crisis"?  What drives it?  Who does it affect?  Can it be solved?  What can YOU do to help?  We hope to address all these questions and more, and conclude with actionable data that students and adults can take with them to address this national tragedy in the coming year.

Fifth Friday on a Wednesday

This week begins our "Fifth Friday on a Wednesday" series, where we take advantage of the rare occurrence of five Fridays in a single month to celebrate Rotary fellowship and friendship.

Since Friday nights begin often busy weekends - and in this case a holiday weekend - we have elected to observe the fifth Friday - you guessed it - on Wednesday evenings instead.

Join us Wednesday, August 28 at 5:30 pm, at the NEW Galena ARC.

We will enjoy snacks and beverages before being given a tour of the newly completed Infant Childcare facility, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Galena.

2019 District Conference

A big and heartfelt thank you to all who attended the Rotary 6420 District Conference on May 17 & 18.  The conference was a rousing success, attended by over 100 Rotarians from Northwest Illinois. In addition to inspirational speeches by Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars and Rotarians from around the globe, guests were entertained by the Haunted Galena Tour Company and the Galena Generals.  Rotarians volunteered their time to plant trees on Horseshoe Mound, and were rewarded for their efforts with a tour of Casper Bluff and the Thunderbird Effigy, courtesy of Rotarian Steve Barg.

Steve Barg, CEO of JDCF, demonstrates the correct way to plant a tree.
75 trees were planted on Horseshoe Mound by volunteers from
Americorps, Wal Mart, and the Rotary Club of Galena.

Jan Lavacek and Carole Sullivan were recently awarded the coveted "Service Above Self" award, given to recognize citizens who have exemplified the Rotary Motto.

Among their numerous accomplishments in the community, Jan and Carole are co-founders of the Galena Center for the Arts, one of the newest gems in the Galena hillside. The Center houses an art gallery featuring local artists, an exhibit hall showcasing special exhibits throughout the year (currently local artist Janet Checker), artist workspace, low level theatre and exhibit space (currently featuring artwork in the “Broad Ideas” experience).

Rotary 4 ARC

Galena Rotary Pledges $65,000

The Rotary Club of Galena has pledged to raise $65,000 to present to the Galena ARC.  The funds will be designated for the expansion of their infant childcare facilities.  The contribution details are:
  • $25,000.00 to sponsor a wing in their new facility
  • $10,000.00 for furniture and supplies
  • $30,000.00, 1 to 1 matching grant for individual donations*
The Galena ARC has been a critical part of growing up in Galena for generations, and now it needs to grow to meet the needs of a new generation.  Galena needs young families to survive, and young families need affordable daycare.

The Rotary Club of Galena has taken notice, and is compelled to act.  Our traditional focus of youth and education fits nicely with the ARC's mission, and their past achievements inspire us to believe they will continue to be a vital part of our community, with the support of Rotary and others.

The fundraising kicks off with this year's "Rotary Roars for Youth" auction.  For tickets and donation forms, go to www.Rotary4ARC.com.

* matching grant is for donations from individuals, not organizations, government agencies or businesses. The purpose is to encourage citizens to donate the ARC.

Service Above Self

The Rotary Club of Galena honored two members of the Rotary Club of Combarbala, Chile–Gloria Margarita Miranda Tapia, right, and Miguel Alberto Oñate Collado, left–on Wednesday, June 7, with the club's Service Above Self Award. Since 2004, when Rotary International initiated its Twin Club program in celebration of its centennial, the Galena and Combarbala Rotary clubs have jointly worked on a number of projects. This included building public restrooms in Combarbala's Plaza de Armas and providing unused firefighter turnout gear to Combarbala's firefighters and bringing a number of Combarbala teachers to the Galena area. Rotary District 6420 has also assisted with projects, sending English language acquisition specialists to work with English teachers in the Combarbala area. Presenting the awards was Mike Steinhoff, Galena club president.

Service Above Self Award

Service Above Self Award

The Galena Rotary Club is proud to announce that it has created an award to recognize citizens who have exemplified the Rotary Motto “Service above Self.” Rotary International was founded with the following objectives:

The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition
of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each
Rotarians occupation as an opportunity to serve society.

The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal,
business, and community life.

Our search for such individuals will take in consideration the Rotary 4-way Test:

  • Is it the truth?
  • Is it fair to all concerned?
  • Will it build goodwill and better friendship
  • Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

As Rotarians we all strive to make these tenets a part of our daily lives. Our communities are as fine as they are because there are many other citizens who do the same without being members of our club. In seeking to identify and recognize those citizens, we ask your assistance by submitting any citizen you feel is worthy of such recognition.

We thank you for your help on our endeavor.

Guide Lines for Choosing a Service above Self Candidate

The following procedures are meant to be guide lines only. They were developed to facilitate an attempt at an objective procedure in selecting a candidate. In no way is this to be constructed as the final means in making what will ultimately be a subjective decision.

1. Each applicant will be considering by looking at scope of contribution, length of time dedicated to the activity, other community involvement and value of the activity to the community.

2. A point system was devised for each category.
a. Value of community 1-10 points
b. Scope of service 1-10 points
c. Time devoted to activity 1-10 points
d. Length of service 1-5 points (1 point for each year)
e. Other community involvement 1-3 points

3. Each member of the committee will vote for the top five applicants giving 5 points to first choice and 1 point for fifth choice.

4. Ties will be broken by a consensus of the committee members.

Galena club hosts Chilean visitor

The Rotary Club of Galena hosted an English language educator from Combarbala, Chile for three weeks in January. This visit is part of the ongoing relationship the Galena club has with the Rotary Club of Combarbala.
Paola Perez, who is in charge of English language education for the 30 schools in the Commune of Combarbala, arrived in the United States during the coldest days of January. The purpose of her visit was to improve her English language skills, observe how English is taught to English language learners, observe how foreign languages are taught and to finalize plans for a Vocational Training Team project between the Combarbala Club and Rotary District 6420. The team will leave the USA on June 12 and return on June 28.
While here, Ms. Perez visited schools in Galena and Dubuque, Iowa, and Muskegon, Mich. She also visited Clarke University and Grinnell College.
With the accompanying photo, Katie Murphy, right, chats with Paola Perez.
