Rotary Cheers on the World Cup on Granville Island

Instead of our regular Tuesday luncheon, more than 50 Rotary Club of Vancouver members, family, and friends gathered on Granville Island to experience the excitement of the FIFA World Cup together.

Hosted by our newest member, Tom Lancaster, General Manager of Granville Island, the event combined beautiful summer weather, great company, and the electric atmosphere of one of Vancouver's largest public World Cup celebrations. With a dedicated Rotary section overlooking the giant 24-foot screen, members enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship while joining thousands of fans from around the world.

The featured Round of 16 match between Switzerland and Colombia delivered plenty of drama. Both teams battled through a tense 90 minutes and extra time without finding the back of the net, showcasing outstanding defending and goalkeeping. The match was ultimately decided in a nail-biting penalty shootout, where Switzerland prevailed 4-3, earning a place in the World Cup quarterfinals.

From cheering on every save to sharing food, conversation, and plenty of laughs, the event was a wonderful reminder that Rotary is about more than meetings—it's about building friendships and creating memorable experiences together.
