Madison is a great place to live because there are so many residents with advanced degrees, comprehensive skills and creative minds. One of them is Michelle Sharpswain, PhD, who is incorporating the power of community service in the curriculum for a new Madison-area high school, scheduled to open next year.

She has worked and volunteered in public, public charter, and independent schools, as well as postsecondary education and non-profits.

Sharpswain is the founder of the Madison Expeditionary Learning Academy & Center for Engagement. It's a community-based, non-profit organization committed to providing high-quality educational programming for children and teachers in the Madison area.

An integral part of this instruction includes innovative projects related to classroom lessons and the needs of the community. For example, Sharpswain's summer camps include the Little Free Library program that has swept the state and country. The kids paint and eventually plant the new library for all to use and enjoy.

Michelle Sharpswain speaks to Madison South Rotary on August 26 at the Sheraton Hotel. For more information, see http://madisonelacademy.org/
