A MAN’S ODE TO THE SEASONS
By Francis M. Webster
Spring - a season of hope!
I eagerly anticipate...
Flowers raising their heads thru’ the snow,
Leaf buds bursting forth on tree limbs,
Robins returning, little rabbits scampering,
Dreaming about flowers and veggies to be
planted,
Easter eggs and hats blossoming in
technicolor,
and refreshing rains,
Basketball, hockey, spring training, and golf...
But then there’s...
Pruning shrubs, fertilizing,
Picking up dead limbs,
Spading the garden, planting seeds,
Thatching the lawn,
Putting the lawn furniture out,
Preparing the lawnmower,
Removing storm windows,
Replacing the screens, and...
washing the car.
I’m tired already!
Time for a nap.
Summer - a season of pleasure!
I eagerly anticipate...
Lolling in the hammock on warm lazy days,
Swimming in the pool,
Basking by the ocean,
Smelling the roses,
Barbecuing on the patio, eating fresh strawberries, tomatoes, corn-on-the-cob, green beans, and peas fresh out of the pod, and home made ice cream!
Visiting relatives and other friends,
Vacations, baseball and golf...
But then there’s...
Mowing the lawn,
Cultivating the garden,
Weeding and, deadheading the flowers,
Refinishing the deck,
Repairing the house,
Watering the lawn and gardens, and...
washing the car.
I’m tired again!
Time for a nap.
Autumn - a season of reaping!
I eagerly anticipate...
Picking the squash,
Carving pumpkins,
Trick or treating and
Little people dressed up as goblins,
Watching leaves turn to vivid colors,
Enjoying warm days and crisp nights,
The World Series, football and golf...
But then there’s...
Raking leaves,
Pruning the roses and shrubs,
Cleaning and mulching the gardens,
Filling the wood shed,
Butchering and canning,
Removing screens and replacing storms, and
washing the car.
I’m still tired!
Time for a nap.
Winter - a season of celebration!
I eagerly anticipate...
Making snow men and throwing snow balls,
Icicles hanging from the eaves,
Sitting and reading in the glow of the fireplace,
Remembering the birth of Jesus,
Watching children open presents,
And sipping a cup of hot buttered rum!
Toasting the new year and
watching the crystal ball drop,
College football playoffs, the Super Bowl,
and golf...
But then there’s...
Carrying wood for the fire place,
Shoveling snow,
Salting the sidewalk,
Repairing frozen pipes, and
washing the car.
Not quite so tired but
But still its time for a nap!
