GOLF TOURNAMENT UPDATE
In lieu of a speaker Monday, Smoky Hill Rotary received an update on the 5th Annual SHRC Golf Tournament fundraiser from PP Joe Hughes and the Golf Committee. The tournament will be held on August 7, 2015 at Common Grounds Golf Course in Aurora.
It was 5 years ago that then President Al Horton asked for ideas for a new type of fundraiser for the club and the SHR Foundation. Joe and PP Gary Frisch proposed a golf tournament and the idea was accepted. In the last four years, SHRC has raised more than $80,000 to support the activities of both. It is now one of the most successful Rotary Golf events in the area.
Each of the committee members spent some time going over their own area:
*PDG Talee Crowe is back ad Day of Event coordinator. She utilizes 10 to 20 volunteers to greet the golfers in the morning, sell string, mulligans, etc., sell raffle tickets, and man the various competition holes around the course. Naturally, these volunteers can't be golfing on the day, so for us non-golfers, it is a great way to become engaged in the event. When we are closer to the day, Talee will circulate sign up sheets. This is also a great way to get our significant others involved in this event.
*PP Mark Johnson is once again the event bookkeeper. To date, we have $8,000 and 24 players. Our goal is to have 144 players, to get your groups together and get their names to the Golf Committee.
*PP Jim Wingert is the Corporate Donations leader. Jim is hoping to raise $20,000 in corporate donations, which would be an increase from last years $17,750. If you have ideas for potential donors, let Jim know.
*President Paul Urtz is in charge of lottery sales. The procedure will be the same as it has for the last several years. There will be an number of great prizes to be won, so by tickets early and often.
*Hugh Radke reported that the Krank Golf Club people would once again be at the tournament with one of their unique drivers. Golfers will be invited to give a small donation to the fundraiser for the privilege of using the driver on one hole. Hugh is also in charge of he closest-to-the-pin competition. This year, golfers will contribute money to a pot, half of which will then go back out as the prize. This could mean more than $300 to the winner!
*PP Gary Frisch will be handling banners for hole and fairway sponsors and corporate donors. One of the goals is to increase the hole and fairway sponsors by an additional 20 at $125 each. For returning sponsors, there is no additional expense as their banners are made up already. New sponsors would require a new banner at the events expense.
*PP Clay Fell is back the shirt moghul. This year's shirt will be the same design and color as last years, to contact him if you don't have one yet.
*PP Betsy Jansen is in charge of prizes. She is looking for 1) golf related items (rounds of golf, clubs, balls, etc.) and 2) entertainment items (dinners, stays at hotels, etc.). One of here personal goals is to expand the number of women playing in the tournament, particularly all-women teams.
*Kay Johnson and Cindy Hughes will once again be putting together the gift bags that each golfer will receive.
Dave Maxwell said that as incoming president, he has already spent a lot the the money we haven't yet raised, so he needs us all to get out there so he doesn't look foolish! Remember, while we have a Golf Committee to organize the event, every member is a part of the golf committee. Service Above Self-the fundraiser is the place where service to our community and the world begins.
