We had the pleasure of having Kevin Long, Director and Allan Frank, Assistant Director of the Liberty High School Grenadier band tell of the recent trip to Hawaii for the Waikiki Holiday Parade in honor of the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. As effective educators, they seized the opportunity on the first day to take the students on a tour of Pearl Harbor, including the U.S.S. Missouri, the U.S.S. Pennsylvania and the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial.
The true impact was felt at the Arizona Memorial. With the group was Lehron “Dan” Deysher, a fellow Liberty alumnus, Pennsylvanian and 95-year-old WWII veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor.
Mr. Deysher is a former trumpeter on the U.S.S. Pennsylvania. He continues performing Taps wherever and whenever to honor all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Grenadiers went on to perform with 44 other high school and college bands from across the nation (and one band from Canada) during the Parade.
Fittingly they were asked to play in front of the review stand representing the U.S.S. Pennsylvania and were led during a performance of Taps by Mr. Deysher.
It was not all work and no play as they explored various memorable areas, like hiking “all the way up to Diamond Head” and some well-earned R&R on the beaches of Waikiki.
This was truly a wonderful project filled with memories which will last a lifetime. Aloha - means Hello - Good Bye - I Love You ---- Aloha!
