Tuesday's guest presentation was especially interesting, as Conrad Nobert from the Strathcona Community League shared some of their plans for partnering with the city on the renewal of our neighbourhood.
The city designates areas for renewal over a five-year project life cycle. Beginning in 2019, Strathcona is scheduled for projects and upgrades totaling some $42 million. In past, such decisions have largely been left up to the city, typically replacing "like for like", ie, new sidewalks being put down in exactly the same way and the same place as the old sidewalks. Recently in Edmonton, community-led initiatives have moved away from that trend, with the planning of renewals becoming more collaborative, leading to communities that better meet the needs and vision of the people living there.
The Strathcona Community League's vision is that, "The streets, sidewalks and intersections of Strathcona Centre Neighbourhood are safe, comfortable, beautiful, and accessible to all users. Strathcona Centre is Edmonton’s first Vision Zero Neighbourhood." This re-imagining of the community and the preliminary concepts put forward by the League are truly world-class, paving the way for an environment that is inviting and functional. A team of students from the University of Alberta’s Urban Planning Committee is participating, with four students creating three different concept plans, each of which will present a different vision for the new Old Strathcona.
An extensive Community Engagement process design begins in December and runs through April of next year. Those of us who live and work in the neighborhood might consider participating in this exciting initiative. Learn more here.
With the busy season ramping up for all of us, it's easy to get caught up in everything we need to make a great Christmas for our loved ones. That's why it's particularly important to remember those neighbours in our community experiencing homelessness and poverty.
On December 14th we will once again partner with The Neighbour Centre to put on a fine meal in good company. Volunteers are required for two shifts:
- Meal prep from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
- Meal service, dinner and clean-up from 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
In addition, the donation of commercially-prepared desserts is also needed.
Please find to time to help make this a truly special evening for so many, including yourself! Sign up for a shift or a dessert donation at the Volunteer Donation and Sign Up Page, or contact Kevin McLeod for more information
The Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona is sponsoring a Hockey Pool for Polio Eradication. For a $30 entry fee, participants select a team made up of 3 goalies, 8 defencemen and 12 forwards for a total of 23 players, and send-down their under-performing or injured players during the 2 trade weeks incorporated into the schedule.
All monies raised will be split 50/50, with half the pot going directly to PolioPlus, and the other half going to the pool winner, along with bragging rights, of course.
For the first time in 30 years, the Rotary Bonspiel is coming to Edmonton. Ed Schultz, from the sponsoring Rotary Club of Edmonton West, was kind enough to make time to fill us in on this terrific opportunity to meet and compete with Rotarians from all across both districts. It's also the perfect way to introduce non-Rotarian curlers to the organization, ensuring that they have lots of fun while getting to know people from near and far.
The 57th on-ice meeting of teams from District 5370 and 5360 takes place at the Thistle Curling Club, running from February 22nd - 25th. Curlers of all abilities - from novice to Brier contender - are welcome. Single players and 4-person rinks can register, but register soon to ensure your place at this entertaining event. For more details and on-line registration, got to www.rotarydistrictbonspiel2018.ca.
Our annual Christmas party will be held at the newly-renovated and re-branded Artisan Café, now named Rooster, on December 12th. Members, families and guests are all welcome at this opportunity to socialize, enjoy the fellowship of the festive season, and maybe take part in some holiday hijinx!
Children under 12 attend for free; all others at a very reasonable $10 each. Cost includes delicious fare courtesy of the good folks at Rooster, and a cash bar will be on hand.
We will send out anon-line registration link as soon as its available, so watch your inbox and remember to RSVP by no later than December 8th, or contact Saiyed Jaffer for more information. Come share in what’s sure to be a merriest of meetings.
The fun, fearless and focused members of the Whyte Ave Rotary Club are always welcoming visitors, volunteers and community-minded citizens to meetings and events.
