Part two of our grant process to Bags of Fun Omaha is here. As you may remember, late last year we had presented Bags of Fun with a donation to further their causes and visited their Foundation's office to see first-hand how they operate and how they serve our community. They gave us a preview of what goes into making their amazing bags for kids with chronic illnesses. Now, we are going back to their office to pack some of the bags that they need to get out to the kids. We are looking for about 10 volunteers for this event to help out getting these bags created. Who can attend: Omaha Morning + Northwest Omaha Rotarians RSVP by emailing the service coordinator: Aaron Tomita (aaron.tomita@aviorwealth.com) If you have any questions please reach out.
Warm regards, Aaron Tomita OMR Treasurer & Service Coordinator |

Life as an Intelligence Officer in Latin America
Apr. 11, 2023
Bob Nelson entered Navy Flight School in Pensacola in October 1967 as a pre-requisite for an intelligence specialty. The program was designed to equip graduates to brief better the flight crews who were flying combat missions of aircraft carriers in Vietnam. Bob completed eight months of special training beyond flight school and was headed for Vietnam, assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Midway (now permanently docked in San Diego as a floating museum). Bob received new orders to USSOUTHCOM in the Panama Canal Zone at the last minute. They needed a junior navy officer to be on the joint staff USSOUTHCOM. That navy office needed a background in Political Science and Spanish. He fit that requirement as that was his college major, and he spent three years delivering the daily brief for the general staff (a 4-star Army general, a 2-star Air Force general, and 4 other 1-star generals from the Army and Air Force). USSOUTHCOM’s responsibility was protecting US interests in Central & South America and the Caribbean, excluding Mexico and Cuba. Their general responsibility included military bases, U.S. businesses, U.S. Embassies, and U.S. citizens living or traveling in those areas. Bob became good at predicting the overthrows of governments, which happens more frequently in that part of the world than one might imagine. He traveled throughout Central and South America and came home after three years. He stayed in the Navy Reserves in intelligence and retired after 26 years of combined service. He was a Navy Captain, the same rank as a full Colonel in the other services, one rank under Admiral. |
