AT THE GONG

I, President Jeff, opened the meeting at precisely 12:15:00 Atomic Time.  I welcomed everyone to our meeting and made note of today’s special event, The Scholarship Awards Ceremony.  I provided the Club with some words of wisdom:

“I don’t see the point in measuring life in terms of time anymore; I’d rather measure life in terms of making a difference.” – Stephen Sutton
“We live in a world where joy and empathy and pleasure are all around us, there for the noticing.” – Ira Glass.

After acknowledging that I know neither of these fellows a couple of smart people who shall remain nameless (Hillary and Marty) raised their hands saying they had heard of them.  It set an intellectual tone for the rest of the meeting which our Special Guests fit right into!

Always one to shake things up, take the risky road and chance the anger of his fellow Rotarians, I then wished everybody a good lunch and put off calling for visiting Rotarians and Guests; what a daredevil I am!.

AT THE GONG
President Jeff gonged us to attention right about 12:15.

Irv Schwartz led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and tried to inspire us with the following words of wisdom, “We were all born with two eyes, two ears and one mouth, so we should watch and listen twice as much as we talk.”

Rich Benson complained that he had heard this before and disagreed with the concept.  (The thought for the day, not the pledge.)

I know that I indicated that I would try to send out some more info on board activity this year, and while you have received some you have not received enough. As my time as President runs short, i will try to get that process going again. So here goes!

The RCTL Board of Directors met last Wednesday evening and we had some visitors: Tony Engstrom, Wally Chipman and Marty Malkin were present along with a quorum of the Board. We addressed a number of issues; I will try to summarize them below.

AT THE GONG
President Jeff rang the brass bell at promptly 12:17pm and stopped all the fooling around. The ever cheerful Marty Malkin led us in the pledge and followed with these ‘foolish’ thoughts for March ‘32nd’, 2014:
The trouble with practical jokes is that very often they get elected - Will Rogers
I have great faith in fools - self-confidence, my friends call it. - Edgar Allen Poe
The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes - Winston Churchill
Wise men don't need advice. Fools won't take it. - Benjamin Franklin
President Jeff reminded the club that it was April Fool’s Day and if anyone noticed anything around the room that was out of sorts…he’d be collecting observations after the meeting!

President Jeff Engstrom rang the brass bell at promptly 12:17pm. The pledge was recited with enthusiasm and extra volume since we had FIVE guests joining us today!

AT THE GONG

12:15 Gong to Order – President Jeffrey A. Moss gonged the meeting at exactly 12:15 pm and then engaged in a 7 ½ minute hesitation before getting our attention.  He then welcomed everyone to the RCTL Meeting of October 1.

Irv Schwartz led us in the Pledge & provided a Thought for the Day: he suggested a Moment of Silence for our Government (which is not operating today).

Jeff then introduced Rebecca Spencer from Celebrate Life and her “entourage”, Yvonne Robinson and Deborah Vance here to talk about Breast cancer awareness and resources. This has been in the news recently.  We then ate a hardy lunch and talked with our fellow Rotarians.

At the Gong:

Meeting was called to order at some time I am sure that was near or around noon. I was clearly not paying attention. Yours truly lead the pledge “please place your right hand over your left heart” your left heart? Where’s that? And a thought for the day of:  “Live life fully while you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don't try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.” - Anthony Robbins

President Tony started the meeting at 12:15 plus 2 minutes. Yours truly led the club in the pledge, and read a quote from Lady Bird Johnson about every committee needs a person who can be the “spark” or “flame”. Yours truly commented on how that applies to our club and urged members not to wait until the July club assembly, but to join one of our service committees now—the committee chairs need help.

President Tony, ever alert, gonged us to order promptly at some time when the big hand was someplace and the little hand some other place (around 12:18 PM). Your scribe for the day asked the assembly to pledge our allegiance to Old Glory. Waxing philosophic, the assemblage heard the wisdom of 3 wise people:

“One of the secrets of a long and fruitful life is to forgive everybody everything every night before going to bed.” Bernard Baruch.

“Open your eyes look within. Are you satisfied with the life you’re living.” Bob Marley.

“Life is like an onion: you peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep.” Carl Sandburg.

The Future Vision Group met on April 16, 2013.  The group addressed meeting attendance (and a few other things).  As you may remember we have had some very low attendance rates at recent meetings (as low as 40%) and the group wanted to discuss ways to energize existing members so they attend meetings and to see what can be done to make meetings more attractive to new Rotarians.  Some of the suggestions were:

NEW COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGIES

The Future Visions Group met on April 8, 2013. You may recall that this is an informal gathering of Club Members who want to improve Club functions and Member satisfaction, increase meeting attendance and encourage new members to join. We discussed a wide range of perceived challenges from mentoring new members to informing club members about what the Club Board is doing.  A number of suggestions will be implemented right away; others require more refinement and Board or club member input and buy-in. At this meeting we did hone in on the need to improve communications between club administration and club members and between club members themselves. Here is a synopsis of the items discussed and the road map for those suggestions.

AT THE GONG –

Pres Tony waited patiently for more members to show up (at least that’s what he claimed) and finally dinged the meeting to order at 1225).  Yours truly led the Pledge and offered the following Thought for the Day – “You may easily play a joke on a man who likes to argue …simply agree with him” attributed to Edgar Howe, an American author.

The meeting resumed at 1240 (same excuse) with the introduction of Sheri Maier of RC Sausalito, our sole visiting Rotarian.  Christine Goodin introduced her guest, Renee Eisen.

Starting on time, I think, I called for everyone to cover their heart and pledge of allegiance to the flag. All complied. I love it when folks follow direction.  The quote for the day followed…
“Never before has man had such capacity to control his own environment, to end thirst and hunger, to conquer poverty and disease, to banish illiteracy and massive human misery.
We have the power to make this the best generation of mankind in the history of the world …or make it the last.” ~ John F. Kennedy

AT THE GONG

After the end of this Rotary year, President Jeff will be a perfect candidate to work for the Swiss time keeping system! He’s incredibly punctual! At exactly 12:15, President Jeff rang the bell and caught the attention of room bursting with energy! Once everyone assumed the pledging position, we paid respects to Old Glory.

Budd Jones was kind enough to give President Jeff and me our very own copies of Cliff Dochterman’s book. The thought for the day (slightly modified) comes from that special book.  (Yes, I’ve already read the book cover to cover! Thank you,Budd!)

If our Rotary Club were to disappear tomorrow, would anyone miss it? If Rotary International were to disappear tomorrow, would anyone notice? The answer for Rotarians comes when we ask ourselves, “What have I done in the past six months to benefit our Rotary Club?” What has our Club done for our community in the past three months? What would become of our club if every member had done about as much as Jeff Moss (and all Club Presidents!) does? What would happen if no member invited a guest to become a new memberRotary is a personal thing. If you take pride in our club, and give some of your personal time, thought, effort and energy then our club will be much stronger and more valuable to our community. Remember, YOU are Rotary.                                                Cliff  DochtermanAs I was Saying

President Tony followed his predecessor’s bad habits and started the meeting after 12:15 (12:20 to be exact). Yours truly lead the pledge and gave two quotations: “In charity there is no excess” by Francis Bacon—I then added about giving to The Rotary Foundation and items for our crab feed silent auction. The 2nd quote was “Courage is doing what you’re afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you’re scared” by Eddie Rickenbacker. I reminded folks to have the courage to ask guests to our meetings and to our crab feed.
