Brain health: how healthy is your brain?
Brain health: how healthy is your brain?

Dr. John Sawyer – a Gulfport, MS native – is a lifespan neuropsychologist trained to evaluate children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. He is Co-Director of the Cognitive Disorders and Brain Health Program at Ochsner Health System.

For adults/geriatrics, Dr. Sawyer has particular interest in Alzheimer’s disease (and other types of dementia or memory disorders), concussion/TBI, stroke, movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease), seizures, Multiple Sclerosis, and psychiatric concerns. For pediatrics, Dr. Sawyer has interest in Learning Disorders (e.g., Dyslexia), concussion/TBI, neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., Intellectual Disability, ADHD), and seizures.

Outside of Dr. Sawyer’s primary clinical work, he is interested in brain health and ways to prevent cognitive decline (e.g., smoking cessation, exercise, nutrition, and other healthy behaviors) and provides evaluations and expertise in legal contexts.

2017 Thanksgiving Project
2017 THANKSGIVING PROJECT - Save the date - Thursday, November 16th!  This year our goal is to fill and distribute 150 baskets once again at First Grace United Methodist Church.  There will be a planning meeting at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, September 20th, before our usual Rotary gathering.  Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to come!

Rotary Regards,

Mary Bonfanti
Summer Packs - Thank You!

SUMMER PACKS PROJECT - My sincere thanks to all who supported this project.  Whether you donated your time, funds or food items, YOU made it happen!  I would welcome any suggestions or comments you might have to help streamline the project in future years.

Gratefully,

Mary Bonfanti
Neutral Ground Maintenance--You Are Needed!

The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The Rotary signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

Week of 04/23/18, Andre Rubenstein, Bob Sharp
Week of 04/30/18, Susan Simon, Adrienne Slack

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.

REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.
