This Week's Speaker
Aug 14, 2019
The Times-Picayune and The Advocate
The Times-Picayune and The Advocate

Peter Kovacs is editor of The Times-Picayune and The Advocate. He came to Louisiana from Alabama in 1983, and has been an editor in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where he has had a hand in five Pulitzer Prizes.

He was managing editor at The Times-Picayune until 2012, when he was laid off as part Advance Publications’ move to a three-day-a-week newspaper. He joined The Advocate in Baton Rouge, and launched The New Orleans Advocate to give the city a daily home-delivered newspaper. The competition between The New Orleans Advocate and The Times-Picayune ended this year when Georges Media purchased The Times-Picayune and the two newsrooms combined.

Kovacs is a graduate of Brown University and is married with two sons.

Neutral Ground Maintenance--You Are Needed!

The neutral ground is located on Poydras Street between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Peters Street. The Rotary signs make it easy to see where you need to go. Two or three Rotarians are scheduled each week, but you can get creative and have others help if you wish. If you cannot work during the scheduled week, try to switch off with someone else. During your week, the deal is to pick up trash or broken limbs you find on the neutral ground. You can bring your own garbage bag and gloves. The trash pick up takes less than 15 minutes but be careful on the busy street. After you are finished, just throw the garbage bag into one of the public trash containers on Poydras Street.

Week of 08/12/19  Bob Sharp, Susan Simon
Week of 08/19/19  Adrienne Slack, Michele Spector

During the year, we will arrange to do more gardening work on the neutral ground and go to lunch afterward.

REMEMBER that in addition to keeping up this stretch of Poydras Street, this is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians. Also, if you cannot perform your assigned task think about getting a group of younger folks to handle it for you. They can be Interactors, high schoolers looking for community service hours or just folks looking for a way to get involved.

Member Spotlight

Jay Hakes

Jay Hakes started his career teaching political science at the University of New Orleans.  He left in 1977 to join the Carter administration, where he served on the White House staff.  Later, he held positions as Director of Florida Governor's Energy Office, chief of staff to Florida Governor Bob Graham, Administrator of the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Director of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, and Director of Research and Policy for President Obama's BP Oil Spill Commission.  He is also author of the book A Declaration of Energy Independence and has lectured in many countries around the world on energy topics.

While in Atlanta, Jay joined the downtown Rotary Club (founded shortly after New Orleans).  Since returning to New Orleans in 2013, he has continued to write and speak about energy.  He also watches his former students playing leadership roles in the city, serves on the board of Ecole Biligue, and enjoys living across the street from his two grand daughters.
