Sycamore Rotarians have fun and win at Hula-for-Loota

Members of the Sycamore Rotary Club celebrate at Hula-for-Loota on April 21st, as they split the $3,000 grand prize five ways.

Winners include (L-R) Barry Schrader, Jeff Keicher, Michelle Jones, Julie Sgarlata (on behalf of Ray Dembinski) and Kathy Countryman.  Project chairman Paul Michel (in background) organized and helped host the event at Chapel in the Pines in Sycamore.

Hula-for-Loota is a draw-down fundraiser; with each number that's pulled, the owner is eliminated until the field is narrowed down to eight -- plus two extra numbers, which are raffled off during the evening.

Consolation prizes of cash and merchandise and a 50/50 drawing are available for those eliminated from the main draw; this year, coconut cups were sold at $10 each...with one containing $100, won by Riley Oncken.

Featured Program: Chicagoland Skydiving Center

The Chicagoland Skydiving Center has grown to become one of the premier skydiving locations in the United States, ever since its relocation to the Rochelle Municipal Airport two years ago.

Representatives of the CSC were on hand at the April 20th Sycamore Rotary Meeting, to talk about the increased interest in their company among skydiving enthusiasts.  Rochelle Rotarian Stacey Shewey says the skydiving school, the on-site restaurant and the meeting facilities have made the airport overall a successful operation for the city of Rochelle.

Jason Kane works as their main skydiving instructor; he says on weekends, they're so busy that their aircraft engines run all day long -- they refuel while running hot, and constantly take groups of up to 24 skydivers aloft from opening to sunset.

He says they emphasize safety; new jumpers operate in tandem with experienced skydivers, everyone is thoroughly trained before jumping, and their pilots adhere to strict flight patterns...allowing the airport to operate with normal traffic, even as they conduct jumps.

And Kane notes that the use of wingsuits is growing; the CSC just hosted the first-ever national festival for wingsuit flying, further expanding the interest in their location.  Marketing Director Becky Johns says they're always looking for opportunities to build interest in their business; they offer displays, demonstrations and other exhibitions to any organization or group which wants to find out more about skydiving.

Rotarians at Work Day T-shirts available

Those who have signed up to work at one of our Rotarians at Work Day job sites can pick up their official T-shirts at the upcoming Rotary Club meeting.

These shirts (similar to the one pictured) are for wearing while we are at work on Saturday, May 7th; Rotarians will be at Rotary Park, the Pay it Forward House, the Joiner Cemetery and Hopkins Park to help out various not-for-profit organizations with essential tasks.

If you are unable to attend the meeting, remaining shirts will be distributed at the site.

Jude Wilbers elected to Rotary Board of Directors

The Sycamore Rotary Club has elected Jude Wilbers to the Board of Directors; Wilbers will begin serving on the board as of July 1st, and will stand as Club President in 2019-20.

The Club also re-elected Sally Bruch to the position of Secretary, and Michele Jurkovic as Treasurer.  At its May meeting, the Board is expected to re-appoint Brian Adams as Sergeant at Arms for the coming year.

May 25th Rotary Club meeting at DTMA

The Sycamore Rotary Club will be going on the road -- or more properly, the tarmac -- when it holds its regular weekly meeting on Wednesday, May 25th at DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport.

Rotarians will get a chance to see the airport hangars, equipment and aircraft up close...and learn more about the airport and its operations.

Golf outing set for June 29th

The Sycamore Rotary Club's annual Golf Outing has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 29th at the Sycamore Golf Course.  The four-person scramble begins at 1 o'clock, immediately following a make-up session at 12:00 p.m. inside the clubhouse.

In the evening, the annual Installation Dinner will feature the inauguration of Sue Emberson as the Club President for 2016-17...and the presentation of the John W. Ovitz, Jr. Rotarian of the Year Award.
