Classification Speech: Marijo Schwartz

After spending nearly all of her life in Sycamore as part of the community, Marijo Schwartz -- at the urging of her friend and fellow Rotarian, Heidi Wright -- took the step of becoming a member of the Sycamore Rotary Club, and immediately jumped into working wherever she was needed.

Marijo is a special education teacher for the Sycamore School District, helping to classify students during early intervention and determining what special needs they may have.  Her husband is the owner of P.J.'s Courthouse Tavern; he and his business partner bought up the former Boone's Tavern in 1994 -- a move which concerned her at first, because of its dilapidated condition.  But with lots of work and restoration, they turned it into one of the most popular restaurants in town.

Marijo say she has spent time living in both DeKalb and Sycamore, but much prefers the latter because of all the people she knows and works with...a feeling of community, which is hard to find anywhere else.

Work begins on Rotarians at Work Day

Preparations are underway for our annual Rotarians at Work Day, scheduled for Saturday, May 7th.  Last year was our most successful effort to date, and we hope to be able to do even more this year.

So far this year, we are expecting to work on gardening at the the Pay it Forward House; helping the Sycamore Park District during its annual Park Pride Day; and with veterans and Scouts preparing the Joiner Cemetery for Memorial Day

Over the coming weeks, we'll be contacting the various Rotary affiliated clubs in our area -- DeKalb and Kishwaukee Sunrise, Interact and Rotaract, and our own EarlyAct clubs -- inviting them to contribute personnel and suggest projects we can help out with.

If you want to participate in planning this year's event, or have an organization or project you'd like to suggest, contact Brian Adams at brianadams62@hotmail.com

Host families needed for visiting Chilean teachers

Host families are being sought for four teachers from Chile, who will be visiting northern Illinois next month.

One family each is needed in Sycamore and Rochelle, from February 11th through 13th; this is a one-time event, and long-term hosting will not be required.  This is a great opportunity for a cross-cultural experience for you and your family (the teachers have English language skills).

If you are interested in hosting one of these teachers, please contact Allison Smith (allismith7337@gmail.com).
