The Waukesha Rotary Club is proud to announce the completion of a new school kitchen in Caserío Buena Vista, a remote K’iche’ Maya community in the Guatemalan highlands. This project was made possible through collaboration with nine other Rotary clubs, as well as contributions from the municipality of Joyabaj and the Buena Vista community.
For years, meals for students and community events were prepared in a dark, unsafe structure made of metal sheeting, with a dirt floor and no ventilation. Today, thanks to this partnership, Buena Vista has a safe, ventilated, concrete-block kitchen with electricity, clean floors, and space to prepare healthy, local food.
The new kitchen serves not only the school’s children—replacing processed snacks with healthy food like fresh fruit, beans, and oatmeal—but also supports community events held in the adjacent center. The $19,500 project was funded primarily through Rotary, with Waukesha Rotary and partner clubs contributing over $13,000.
This project is a powerful example of what can happen when local effort meets international partnership. Together, we’ve helped lay a stronger foundation for education, health, and community life in Buena Vista.
