Greetings Everyone,
Sorry if you missed it!  We covered everything from speed dating, to culinary learning  to a nude exhibit at the Union gallery - Rotary truly is the place to be on a Wednesday for lunch.

We had a great presentation by Laura Marlane, Director of the Omaha Public Library, on the amazing things going on there.  They have databases available for tutoring on a whole range of subjects, E books, Audio books, online reservations for books, and an incredible music library at your fingertips.  There is free member use of computers and internet access and reading help available.  The library has Zoo passes, Children's museum passes, and Fontenelle Forest passes available, and even toys available to check out with your library card.  Brad vonGillern. was glad to learn they have even set up an amnesty program for late fees on books.  Who knew the library was such a happening place these days? A new branch is planned for 210th and Q coming soon.  If you haven't been there, go check out the library, it's not the same as when you were a kid.
Thanks to Cella for another interesting and informative program.

We are working hard on the engagement challenge for 2018 encouraging engagement in 6 areas.

911 Tribute of Flags Omaha

The 911 Tribute of Flags Omaha is proud to announce that we have updated and re-launched our Facebook page today with a new name. Please go to the new page and like/follow, and share to your page asking friends and family to follow. We have also created an event invitation you can share with the community, your family and friends through your own Facebook page. The new name reflects our mission of the tribute in Omaha, and should make it easier for others to find through social media. If you have pictures from past events, stories or information you would like to share to this page, please send to our new email address:

In addition, we have also launched a new Instagram account: 911TributeOmaha. Here, you can follow for updates, share pictures and see what others are posting about the tribute. Please also invite others to follow us on Instagram.

Social media is the easiest and fastest way to share our message and this event, and for others to follow who may not be able to attend in person. It is our intention to build on the vision of the original founder, Lynn Castrianno, so it continues to grow and be a part of the Omaha community for years to come. We will keep both of these accounts up to date throughout the year with the help of my favorite volunteer, my daughter Ashley Cummins, who is a Brand/Marketing and Social Media Manager for the wine industry in Napa California. She has graciously offered to manage both of these accounts year round. Thank you Ashley, Love Mom.

Feel free to contact us through the new email address with any questions, or for additional information. It is truly an honor to be a part of this annual event with the help and blessing of Lynn Castrianno and so many wonderful volunteers, honoring everyone lost on 9/11. We hope you will find time on September 5th to join your fellow Rotarians and community volunteers for the installation from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Memorial Park.

Warm Regards,

Kathy Estes, 911 Tribute of Flags Committee

As one of our Club Service Projects, our club both helps plant the flags and remove the flags that each year has commemorated the people who perished in the 9/11 bombings.

THE FLAGS ARE UP!!! We can use your help at Memorial Park on  Sunday, September 16 to take them down. We plan on starting at about 1:00 PM. Family and friends are welcome.

If you are a new member, this counts as a Community Service Project. It is also worth attendance credit.

If you have a Rotary shirt please wear it.

General Crook House – Rotarian Host: Dianne Desler

The Museum is the authentically restored home of Civil War and National Indian Wars hero, General George Crook, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was constructed in 1879 while General Crook served as the Commander of the Department of the Platte. General Crook is known for his supporting role in the landmark 1879 trial of Standing Bear v. Crook.

The house was built in the Italianate style, which represented the grandeur of the military frontier. All furnishings are antiques from the 1880 Victorian period. From early November through the end of December, the museum celebrates 19th Century Holidays, complete with full holiday decorations. The Crook House Guild transforms every room in the house into captivating glimpses at Christmases past.   Collections at this living history museum include decorative arts, costumes, arts and crafts and period furnishings.

School of Construction Sciences – Rotarian Host: Rose Opbroek

We will tour the new buildings that house construction programs that include Apprenticeship Programs, Architectural Design Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction & Building Sciences, Electrical Technology, HVAC & Refrigeration, and Plumbing.

MCC is currently one of the fastest growing postsecondary institutions in Nebraska. Three new buildings, the Construction Education Center, Center for Advanced and Emerging Technologies and the Career and Academic Skills Center, are now open on the Fort Omaha Campus. The new MCC North Express center will open soon at the Highlander Accelerator project near 30th and Parker streets and offer a mix of continuing education, workforce training and outreach services. Planning has started on the Industrial Training Center renovation and for a new facility for the Automotive Technology program.

The addition and enhancement of instructional facilities are geared specifically to prepare students for success in college and the workforce in the four-county area for years to come.

Culinary Arts Institute:  Rotarian Host: Kathy Estes

The Institute for the Culinary Arts at Metropolitan Community College consists of two programs: Culinary Arts & Management and Hospitality & Restaurant Leadership.  The hands-on experience takes place in a state-of-the-art, amazing facility.

“We give our students passion. It is all about passion — passion to cook, passion to serve others and passion to make others smile. It is about sacrifice and commitment. It is about rewards, satisfaction and happy people. We provide the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life, no matter where you are or your stage of life.  Our graduates can work anywhere in the world, in a variety of settings: hotels, restaurants, country clubs, cruise ships, military bases, commissaries, hospitals, assisted living facilities, catering, universities and manufacturing facilities.”

Many of the degree options are accredited by the American Culinary Federation Accreditation Commission, and the ICA has been rated among the top culinary schools in the U.S. MCC has been an accredited institution since 1975.

Tours start promptly at noon.    At 12:45 all are asked to be at the Culinary Arts building for lunch – 12:45 to 1:30pm.   Rotarians are asked to pay individually for the buffet lunch - $14 – cash, check or Fast Pass.
