Judge Laurie Smith Camp

Please keep the family of Judge Laurie Smith Camp in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with their sudden loss.
Based on the outpouring of emails our club has received, she was clearly loved and admired.
Laurie was a member from 2003-2018.

President's Pen

I am on a trip to Duluth MN and the north shore of Lake Superior. I have roots in the area. My mother was born in Superior, WI (the tenth of twelve children!) and her Ukranian-born grandparents (Iwasko) survived the great fires of 1918 in the Cloquet / Branston MN area by hiding in a root cellar and then jumping into a nearby creek, barely escaping with their lives. It should be a fascinating trip.

Camille will preside at our meeting on September 30 via zoom. Thank you, Madame Past-President!

We were joined by Chris Janicek, owner of CupCake Omaha and Democratic candidate for United States Senate in the 2020 election.

Janicek grew up in Davis City, Nebraska and graduated from UNO in 1983. He has been a small business owner and a real estate investor. He decided to get into politics after a massive heart attack and subsequent healthcare costs almost led to bankruptcy. His platform centers around healthcare and he advocates for a public option for healthcare, increasing the minimum wage, and reducing the need for abortions by making adoptions easier and more comprehensive sex education. He sees healthcare as an investment and not an expense.

Not one to pull any punches, Janicek noted that although he voted for Senator Ben Sasse in 2014, he does not believe the current senator has not delivered on his promises and does not believe he is the right man for the job. Janicek hopes to appeal to Democrats, Republicans, and Independents with a message of “Enough.” He would like for Democrats to stop embracing radical agendas and painting all Republicans as “evil.”

We thank Mr. Janicek for taking the time to share his vision for Nebraska with us and we encourage all members to vote in the election on November 3.

Salvation Army NIght Watch

Lindy Hoyer has been in touch with the Salvation Army in regards to their winter watch food distribution program. She has signed our club up to serve on 4 nights beginning in December through February. Each shift will require up to 3 club members to sign up, two will be serving food and one will be the jump (person who organizes crowd outside and hands out clothing). At this time no drivers are needed. The shifts start at 5:45 p.m. at the SA Western Divisional Headquarters, 10755 Burt Street. If new to volunteering for SA, need to arrive a bit early to fill out paperwork. The shifts each night are from 5:45-8 p.m. Volunteers must bring and wear a mask, wear warm clothes.

Send Happy Notes to residents at the Salvation Army’s Durham Booth Manor. This is a project that can be done at any time.

If we could get a few club members signed up to send them, Lindy Hoyer will get a committee member to coordinate the frequency of the notes.

Just cheery notes to brighten someone’s day.
