President's Pen
What an informative meeting!  We had David G. Brown, president and CEO of Greater Omaha Chamber which is one of the largest and most highly accredited chambers in the nation.  The chamber is in the top three percent of chambers nationally.  He began his career in organizational leadership in Michigan in 1983 as president of the Monroe County Industrial Development Corporation and director of the Port of Monroe.  After serving in different capacities he came to the Greater Omaha Chamber in October 2003.

The chamber has built a five-year strategy to identify the steps toward the 2045 projected view of Omaha and how to grow the community. The growth agenda is broken into three categories, people, place and prosperity.  The work program is divided into people, place and business growth.  They are spending lots of energy on business startups with a focus on tech, food and minority owned construction businesses.  These are at the center of their agenda.  Another target is higher waged jobs in order to have a bigger impact in the community.

Finding people is an issue for the jobs we have available.  Our population is growing very slowly.  We are losing more people from 18-34 years of age than we get back or move to the area.  The chamber is working hard on diversity and inclusion. Code: Omaha. By 2035 Omaha will be a predominantly nonwhite community.  The chambers efforts will help recruit and retain people of all races and cultures to Omaha.   38,000 young people graduate with approximately 14,000 leaving every year.  Through career fairs and other means, they are working to retain the youth of Omaha by exposing them to careers available here in their hometown.  The chamber is working to make Omaha the kind of city people want to live in.  With family and career as a draw they hope to turn things around and entice people to become engaged and committed to a life in our community.  By working to emulate the big city life the thought is to attract people to Omaha.

Having a competitive business climate is also key.  We need to be more competitive in the area of taxes. David shared much more information on this subject.
Make sure you come to the meetings to get the latest scoop on our community.
See you Wednesday!!
