I am challenging you to bring at least one guest to our October 28, 2020 meeting with U.S. Senator Ben Sasse (NE). We have more than 100 members. We should have more than 200 people attending a meeting with a U.S. senator five days prior to an election, no matter the affiliation or the state. From any point of view, control of the senate is the most critical political event for our country on November 3^rd and in the coming weeks and months. This meeting will be a hybrid meeting if the senator is in Omaha. If he is in Washington, D.C., we will meet online only. Either way, let’s break the internet.

John Higgins climbed to the top of his profession as an elite basketball referee, assigned to eight final fours at the climax of March Madness. He could have been officiating in the NBA finals if not for the added time away from his family and his business.

But many of us wouldn't have known about the singular success of this native Omahan if not for the abuse John, his family and his roofing business suffered from fans of the Kentucky Wildcats. His Rotary program covered both his path to the top and his problems when a Kentucky radio station aired his home and business phone numbers and put a nasty spin on the challenge of refereeing bigtime ball games.

And he looked ahead to the delayed opening in this Covid season, where "We may spend a month in a bubble in Las Vegas." He acknowledges the contact problem in a sport where he blows a whistle and handles a ball that every player touches. "But I don't really have a fear of it," Higgins said.

"You've got to keep in pretty good shape," he noted, for a job that requires running more than three or four miles per game. And only half the crowd may agree with any close call he makes. But even the worst of that Kentucky harassment that scared his children and harmed his business had a bright side. Many other Kentuckians and many journalists, both local and national, had his back.

Higgins started by handling grade school and CYO games, worked his way up with the help of former UNO coach Bobby Herold, landed an assignment calling the national championship for Division II, finally officiating as one of the best-known referees in NCAA tournament play. The job takes him on the road five months out of the year, often in the spotlight at packed arenas with millions watching him on television.

He fielded wide-ranging questions about the most memorable experiences from a triple overtime thriller between Kansas and Oklahoma to encounters with the likes of Bobby Knight. He described a typical weekend on the road and pregame discussions of team tendencies, whether it's the rougher style of a Bobby Huggins West Virginia team or the finesse approach of other teams.

With a father who coached at Roncalli, Higgins was familiar with Rotarian Lloyd Gnirk, and others who knew him from his own playing days at Cathedral High.

Salvation Army Night Watch

Lindy Hoyer has been in touch with the Salvation Army in regards to their winter watch food distribution program. She has signed our club up to serve on 4 nights beginning in December through February. Each shift will require up to 3 club members to sign up, two will be serving food and one will be the jump (person who organizes crowd outside and hands out clothing). At this time no drivers are needed. The shifts start at 5:45 p.m. at the SA Western Divisional Headquarters, 10755 Burt Street. If new to volunteering for SA, need to arrive a bit early to fill out paperwork. The shifts each night are from 5:45-8 p.m. Volunteers must bring and wear a mask, wear warm clothes.

Send Happy Notes to residents at the Salvation Army’s Durham Booth Manor. This is a project that can be done at any time.

If we could get a few club members signed up to send them, Lindy Hoyer will get a committee member to coordinate the frequency of the notes.
