Manuel Druminski is a former Orlandus Lassus Scholar. In 2009, right after ending his studies at the Musikhochschule, he became 1st concert master at Staatstheater Freiburg. This sought-after position he gained at the very young age of 26. Today, Manuel also gives concerts as a solo violinist and chamber musician - in the classic as well as in the non-classic sector. |

Matteo Bugli is a PhD Student at the Max Planck Institut für Astrophysik, Garching bei München. He is specialised on magnetohydrodynamics simulations in general relativity, accretion discs around compact objects, relativistic reconnection and dynamos. He also works in the areas of numerical schemes for the treatment of stiff hyperbolic equations in parallel envi- ronment and High Performance Computing. Matteo will give us an insight in the astrophysical phenomenon of black holes. |

Prof. Franz Pfeiffer, Faculty of Physics and Medicine, Munich School of BioEngieering, Technical University Munich, 85748 Garching, Germany The basic principles of x-ray image formation in radiography have remained essentially unchanged since Röntgen first discovered x-rays over a hundred years ago. The conventional approach relies on x-ray attenuation as the sole source of contrast and draws exclusively on ray or geometrical optics to describe and interpret image formation. This approach ignores another, potentially more useful source of contrast, namely the phase information. Phase-contrast imaging techniques, which can be understood using wave optics rather than ray optics, offer ways to augment or complement standard attenuation contrast by incorporating phase information. This presentation will review the recent development and status of x-ray phase-contrast and dark-field imaging in general, and focus particularly on our recent efforts to evaluate x-ray phase-contrast for future clinical applications in radiography and computed tomography. A variety of experimental results will be shown that highlight the potential of this novel method for biomedical, clinical, and industrial applications. The presentation concludes with a presentation of first in-vivo results obtained with a small-animal phase-contrast CT scanner, recently developed in our lab. |

Achim Wixford, University of Augsburg, Experimental Physics 1 Many materials provide quite remarkable features in terms of their mechanical, electronic, magnetic or optical properties. Semiconductor structures and layered systems thereof for example have revolutionized our daily life over the last few decades. Morover, if reduced to the nanometer scale, a wealth of novel properties and physical effects emerged that are partially already exploited technologically. However, some other materials have their own particular specialities that cannot be accomplished by semiconductors alone. By the deliberate realization of hybrid nanostructures consisting of semiconductors and piezoelectric oxides, or soft matter materials like supported membranes and elastomers we are able to create functional nanosystems that aim towards ‘the best of both worlds’ in such hybrids. In my talk, I will present a few examples for functional hybrid nanosystems for photonic, electronic and even medical/biological applications. By letting Surface Acoustic Waves interact with these hybrids, novel tunable functionalities can be created that are only possible by combining very different material classes. |

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Friedrich Christian Simmel, Lehrstuhl für die Physik Synthetischer Biosysteme, TUM, and Co-Coordinator of the German Excellence Cluster "Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM)" Over the past two decades, synthetic biology has emerged as a highly interdisciplinary field of research that is based on the application of "engineering principles" to biology. Most commonly, synthetic biology is defined as the (re)engineering of biological parts, devices and systems. Research topics involve the synthesis of novel molecular structures using biological material, the realization of artificial cell-like systems, and the engineering of biochemical pathways and genetic control circuits in live cells. Synthetic biology is of interest both for fundamental research and for applications. On the one hand, the attempt to create or engineer living systems inevitably touches upon fundamental questions about the living state and the behavior of complex systems. On the other hand, a wide variety of applications are envisioned for synthetic biological systems, ranging from bioproduction over biosensing and bioremediation to nano- medicine. In this talk a brief overview of the history of synthetic biology will be given, followed by a survey of this type of research in the Munich area (and from my own group). |

Prof. Wüstenhagen is one of the most profound researchers and speakers about renewable energy and climatee change. He used to be delegate to the IPCC of Switzerland and is member of the Advisory Board of the Swiss Federal Government's Energy Strategy 2050 (2011-2015) Prof. Wüstenhagen will talk about the social and economic consequences of climate change and about options and challenges to cope with it. |

Zugelassen zur Teilnahme sind alle Autos mit H-Kennzeichen und jüngere Autos mit dem Potential zum künftigen Klassiker, wie luftgekühlte Porsche 911, BMW Z1 oder Z8, Mercedes Cabrios, Jaguar XJ, die jeweils nach 1987 gebaut wurden. Aber auch jüngere Fahrzeuge, nach denen sich kleine Jungs umdrehen, sind ebenfalls gerne gesehen. Auf einer landschaftlich reizvollen Strecke (vorwiegend Nebenstraßen) geht es von der Mercedes-Niederlassung aus gen Westen bis nach Augsburg zu einem neuen Automuseum, welches im Frühjahr 2017 eröffnet werden soll. Zwischen den 3 Etappen mit jeweils ca. 60 km Länge gibt es eine gemeinsame Mittags- und Kaffeepause. Die Teilnahmegebühr beträgt 50 Euro pro Person (Spendenbescheinigung). Dear fellow club members and spouses On July 3rd we will celebrate our “Change-of Guards” Meeting, handing over the responsibility for our next Rotarian Club Year to the incoming president and board. Since July 3rd will also be my 60th birthday, I would like to invite you to celebrate both in our garden and house at Dreschstr. 17, 80805 München. We will be delighted to welcome you as of 19:00h. The food will be prepared by a team of RCMI Chefs. In the spirit of Rotary I would ask that you do not bring anything as a gift, but donate generously to one of the projects below. In the board we have decided to ask for a tax deductible donation of €80 per member and €40 per spouse present or registered. Nepal after the Earthquakes 2015 and the Dhulikhel Hospital – an update
5 years ago our attention at the RCMI had been drawn to Nepal, one of the poorest countries oft he world. After more than 2 years of negotiations we could finalize two Matching Grants to support the Dhulikhel Hospital (DHos) together with the RC Freising, RC Neustadt/Vohburg and RC Dhulikhel in 2014. Additionly we supported the DHos with 2 more projects (Dpt. for Gynecology and Dpt. for Gastroenterology). During the severe earthquakes in April and May 2015 many people died, even more lost their homes and regions of the country were destroyed. Manifold support may alleviate the unbelievable suffering. We have to acknowledge that only long-term help will be successful.
