The Electoral Schwaige predates the construction of Nymphenburg Palace. In the 17th century, the estate, comprising its woodlands, fields and meadows, was known as Ober- and Unterkemnath.
Elector Ferdinand Maria acquired the “Schwaighof” for 10,000 guilders. To mark the birth of his son, Crown Prince Max Emanuel, he presented the Schwaighof to his wife, Adelaide of Savoy. In 1664, he commissioned the construction of the palace. Max Emanuel himself later played a significant role in the palace’s expansion.
Nymphenburg was the summer residence of the House of Wittelsbach for many years and, together with the palace grounds, is now one of Germany’s most famous attractions. The Schwaige has been part of the palace complex since 1714.
