2017-2018 Rotary Theme Announced
Rotary Internatioal President-elect Ian Riseley announced the theme for the 2017-2018 Rotary year - Rotary: Making a Difference. How appropriate, as it is what we do every day.

Key elements to his plan for the year are protecting the environment and doing what we can do to curb climate change.

Ian challenged every Rotary club to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1 July and Earth Day on 22 April 2018. Trees remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which slows global warming.

If your club hasn't participated in the past, you should consider this amazing program for your high school students!

Polar Plunge Donations
2017 DISTRICT 7930 POLAR PLUNGE
LEVERAGING YOUR MONEYS 2-FOR-1
GIVE YOUR ALL: END POLIO NOW

Did you know that whatever you donate, solicit in pledges, or contribute in sponsorships for this year’s Polar Plunge effort gets matched $2 for each dollar raised for polio by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in its partnership agreement with Rotary International?

Think about it! For every $100 raised by you, $200 is matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a total contribution of $300 to eradicate Polio in the world. This could be the year! Rotary International and its worldwide partners; the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; World Health Organization; Center for Disease Control and Prevention; and UNICEF are working together to maximize all resources to eradicate polio everywhere in the world. Please provide your generous support!

What's the OPM Strategy?
Rotarians are generous in giving their time, talent and treasure. It's key that we continue to give to our Rotary Foundation's programs, including the Annual Fund. So again, this year, we're committed to the Other People's Money, or OPM, Strategy. Instead of reaching into your own pocket, the Plunge Committee is  asking you to ask a friend, neighbor, family or co-worker to sponsor your plunge or virtual plunge. This strategy has been proven to increase awareness of polio eradication and increase fundraising!

Want proof? The number one club for the past 2 years has hit the $20k mark in polio fundraising. How much of that was OPM? Last year it was 75% of their total donations!

For more information on how to process donations and more download the Plunge Instructions and Frequently Asked Questions document.
World Peace and Understanding Dinner
Daily we hear disparaging news from Syria and we wrench our hands feeling so helpless in combating this atrocity.  Families are trapped in their homes, then surrounded, tortured and killed by their own government, backed by Russian forces as they bomb residential neighborhoods, hospitals, schools and drinking water aquifers.

On February 8 we are hosting Sam Khatib, a national leader in the Syrian American Council as he shares thoughts on a few life-saving efforts and what we can do to help.

  • Heros of Peace - "The White Helmets" are 3,000 heroic volunteers who selflessly rescue people from bombed buildings throughout Syria.  They run to buildings after the bombs have fallen; and to date they have saved 74,000 people.  The White Helmets are Nobel Peace Prize nominees and recipients of US assistance through the US Agency for International Development.
  • Local efforts to gather and send assistance to refugees in Syria and Turkey through NuDay Syria.
  • 4.8 million refugees have fled Syria.  10,000 Syrians have come to the U.S. and a handful have found their way to New England.
As Rotarians we feel the call.  It rattles us when we know we want to help but don't know how. Come. Learn. Act thoughtfully.

Chelsea Hosts Annual Veterans Luncheon
On Tuesday, November 8th, the Rotary Club of Chelsea hosted veterans from all five branches of the armed services to its Annual Veterans Luncheon “A Salute to Service.” There were over 50 veterans and Rotarians in attendance at the luncheon held in the Terranova Grille at the Wyndham Boston/Chelsea. Each veteran in attendance was invited to introduce themselves, the branch of the military they served in and tell a short story they may have from their time in the service. Each veteran was presented with a token of the club's appreciation for their attendance and their service. After the inspirational remarks from our greetings given by the Chelsea City Manager Thomas Ambrosino and the inspirational remarks by the Massachusetts Secretary of Veterans Services, Francisco Urena, each veteran was presented with a token of the club’s appreciation for their attendance and their service. The event was concluded with the singing of the Armed Forces Medley of Songs from Army, Navy, Marines, Coat Guard, and Air Force by the veterans present. Also among those present were Soldiers Home, Superintendent Cheryl Poppe and Veterans Services Officer, Francisco Toro. The Secretary of Veterans Services shared with the attendees about his story in military and that Massachusetts is leading the nation where in every town and city in the commonwealth there is a Director of Veteran Services there to provide for and care for our over 365,000 veterans in the state.

In addition to the Annual Veterans' Luncheon, the Chelsea Rotary Club hosts veterans in August to a cruise around Boston Harbor and a delicious cookout held in conjunction with the Winter Hill Yacht Club. The Chelsea Rotary Club thanks all veterans for their service to our country and hopes to see more of them at our annual events honoring them in 2017.
