Rotary Internatioal President-elect Ian Riseley announced the theme for the 2017-2018 Rotary year - Rotary: Making a Difference. How appropriate, as it is what we do every day.

Key elements to his plan for the year are protecting the environment and doing what we can do to curb climate change.

Ian challenged every Rotary club to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1 July and Earth Day on 22 April 2018. Trees remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which slows global warming.

But that is not all of the story! He wants us to strive to create more diverse clubs, ones with a more equal balance of women and men, younger members who can continue the legacy of Rotary and a club that mirrors the community it serves. The new flexibility in club's options for meetings should allow more service-minded individuals to engage in Rotary. But it is how we get them involved that will determine the difference we make. That is the challenge - Making a Difference, every day to those who need us.
