DISTRICT 7490 ROTARY FOUNDATION COMMITTEE

Dear Fellow Rotarian:

When I was growing up, my parents often said to me, “A new year’s resolution is something that goes in one ear and out the other.”

While today as an adult, I sometimes appreciate this statement’s play on words, perhaps more often I find myself feeling just a bit remorseful as well because I realize that on January 1 I had optimistically “resolved” to do something, but by February 1, I am aware that I am no longer living up to whatever it was that I had “resolved” to do.

The English poet Edith Lovejoy Pierce once wrote:

We will open the book.

Its pages are blank.

We are going to put words on them ourselves.

The book is called Opportunity,

And its first chapter is New Year’s Day.

As a Rotarian, what can you write in the “book called Opportunity” this Rotary year?

You probably already know that the Rotary Foundation’s life-changing programs remain dependent upon your continued support to the Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund.   As district Foundation Committee Chair, therefore, one suggestion I would ask you to consider is to become a sustaining member of the Rotary Foundation by making an annual $100 contribution to our wonderful foundation.  This is not an exorbitant amount for any one person, and if each of the 1.2+ million members of our organization were able to make this commitment, it would catapult our Foundation’s capacity to do good in the world to an entirely new level.

Of course, another special way to support the Rotary Foundation this year would be to consider becoming a Paul Harris Fellow by “rounding up” the total of your previous contributions to equal $1000 or the next $1000 level.

Thus, each of us has a choice about what will be written in our “book of Opportunity” this year and I hope that each of us will begin writing a new and invigorating chapter of our Rotary story.
