Wayne Rotary Club
Dr. Carlos Canseco served as the Rotary International President this year and his theme was "Discover a New World of Service. This was also the first year that a President of Rotary International designated a jacket color for the year and it was a bright yellow jacket. Governor Bob in turn became a yellow jacket man. PDG Ray Wells of our District was serving his first year on the Rotary International Board and one of the special events planned by Governor Bob during the year was a banquet to recognize the role of one of our District members at this level of Rotary International.
Governor Bob, who was identified by many people as a Paterson Club member of Rotary, where he had served as a club President before moving his membership to Wayne where he resided, had a most active year, but the highlight of his year was the wonderful District Conference he chaired at Torremolines, Spain. It was an exciting family orientated Conference with younger teenage members of the Dalzell, Wells, and other families still retaining memories of the event. Some of men still recall their first exposure to topless beaches.
Governor Bob had as his Chief staff members, John Reynolds as his Secretary and Treasurer, Phil Shore as an assistant Secretary, John Hartman as an Assistant Treasurer, and Art Scialla as his Chief Rep.
District activities for the year included the New Jersey Vocational Assembly, which was held at Atlantic City, and the President's Ball held at the Birchwood Manor. The International Convention was held in Kansas City, Missouri this year with the class of yellow jacket Governors making quite a colorful appearance at the event.
The District also continued to playa big role in its support of the Rotary Foundation, the Walter Head Foundation, the District Gift of Life program, and the youth activities of the District.
It is interesting to note that Governor Bob's staff included six future Governors of our District, namely, Scialla, Hartman, Gates, Rosen, Verblauw, and Kleinberg. One could make the observation that it was a training year for our future Rotary years, and Governor Bob set a good example with a year filled with good Rotary fellowship.
