In this Rotary year our District was governed by one of the most dedicated members of our District, who remained fully dedicated to Rotary service until his recent death. Governor Carmine came into office after having served as the District Secretary for Governors Johnson, Spaulding, and Delano, and the Conference chairman for Governor Andy Purpuse, at the time he was also serving as the Governor nominee. Governor Carmine had come into Rotary at a very young age, as initially a member of the Kearny Club and then as a member of his last club, the North Arlington Club.
"Renew the Spirit of Rotary" was the Rotary International President's theme for the year, and the President was Bill Robbins from Florida, USA. The International Convention was held in Montreal, Canada, and it coincided with Governor's Carmine's birthday. He hosted his key staff members attending the Convention at a party on the top floor of the highest building in the city with a wonderful view of the city below ..
Vincent McCorry served as the District Secretary, John Hartman as the District Treasurer, and Ed Gehringer as the Chief Rep. A project to donate and provide the Bergen County Blood Bank with a Bloodmobile, which had been initiated in the previous year, was completed this year and the Bloodmobile dedicated.
A District boat ride was held in September, and the annual District football game held in October at West Point with Army playing Rutgers. The annual New York Vocational Assembly was held at the Waldorf Astoria, with a large attendance by our District Rotarians. The President's Ball was held at the Westmont Country Club, and the annual District Interclub meeting, hosted by the Fair Lawn Club at Paramus.
The Walter Head Foundation, which was a District activity very close to Governor Carmine, was given greater emphasis with an increased meaning to the needs of this foundation. Another special program for the year was a "Vaccine for Children" program.
On the last day of the year the new Paramus AM Club was chartered. This was the first club in the Rotary World to be chartered in a territory or location shared by two clubs. It was officially approved by Rotary International eight minutes before a similar charter for a new club in Phoenix, Arizona was approved.
This charter of the new club ended an active year, which truly was a year of "Renewing the Spirit of Rotary" in response to the International President's theme.
