"Build the Future with Action and Vision" was the theme of Rotary International President Luis Giay from Argentina for this year, and this was what Governor Dick did during the year in Rotary service as the Governor of our District.

Governor Dick, accompanied by fIrst Lady Niki, started his year by hosting 250 Rotarians and guests at a colorful Banner Exchange in June at Gatsby's in Cresskill. Past Rotary International Director, Ray Wells, installed Governor Dick as the District Governor.

Governor Dick and District Secretary Gary Hipp had one of the most ambitious schedules for our District ever scheduled, and it resulted in a full year of activities. Governor Dick, accompanied by Gary, completed the visits to the 55 clubs by October 22nd.

In addition to Gary, Governor Dick's key staff members included Emil Geering as the Chief Rep, Dave Seeley as the Treasurer, PDG Vic Schwarz as the District trainer, and PDG Ron Verblauw as the Conference Chairman.

In October Governor Dick led a large contingent of District members to the Pines Manor in Edison for the annual New Jersey Vocational Assembly. The District Rotary Foundation Ball followed this in November, which was held at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton. Governor Dick also then served as the host Governor for the 1996 Rotary Zone Institute held at the Park Ridge Marriott, under the leadership of Rotary International Director Bob Coultas. Over 400 Rotarians and guests attended the Institute from Zones 31 & 32. Over 30 Districts were represented from the North Eastern part of the United States from Maine to Virginia and to the Western border of Pennsylvania.

In the second half of the year, Governor Dick served as the master of ceremonies for the Gift of Life Celebration held at the Brownstone in Paterson, and as the host for the President's Ball held at the Cameo in Garfield. The late Florie Scialla and PDG Art Scialla, chaired this magnificent event which featured Governor Dick and First Lady Niki, descending the circular stairs as the King and Queen in a Camelot theme. Over 600 Rotarians and guests attended this event.

A most successful Walter Head Golf outing came next, and then the highlight of the year, the District Conference held at the Sagamore Hotel at beautiful Lake George, New York. Visiting youth exchange students, and both the outgoing and incoming GSE teams for our exchange with Brazil of that year attended the Conference. The international convention this year was held in Glasgow, Scotland.

To complete Governor Dick's most successful year was the admission to the District of the Oradell AM Club, active youth activity programs, support of the Rotary Foundation and the Walter Head Foundation and the Gift of Life program, and the distribution by mail of the Governor's Letter to all of the members of the District.

Four District clubs celebrated milestone anniversaries during the year; they were Garfield for their 50th year, Passaic Valley for their 50th year, and Hoboken for their 75th year, and North Hudson County for their 75th year. Governor Dick presented RI citations to the four clubs. It was indeed a year of "Action and Vision".
