"Be a Friend" was the Rotary International theme of President Bill Huntley from England, and Governor Bill added his District theme of "Touch a Life through Rotary. " Both themes were well utilized in the beautiful International Conference held that year in Nice, France. PRill Carmine Torsiello of our District served as one of the vice chairman for the Convention. Side trips to Monaco and areas in France added to the highlights of this most colorful convention. Governor Bill was assisted in his year by staff members, Florie Scialla as his Secretary, Dave Seeley as his Treasurer, and Phil Ross as his Chief Rep.

The activities for the year started with a Regional Rotary Foundation Seminar held at the Governor Morris Hotel in Morristown, and the Charter Night for the Paterson AM Club in September. They were followed by the annual New Jersey Vocational Assembly held at the Birchwood Manor and the Rotary Foundation Ball held at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton. In the second half of the year the Gift of Life Celebration was held at the Brownstone in Paterson at a time when Rotary was celebrating its 90th birthday. The President's Ball, held at the Birchwood Manor, followed this.

Governor Bill was the second Governor serving from the Maywood Club.

The highlight of the year was the District Conference held at picturesque Goat Island at Newport, Rhode Island. Tours of this boating resort and the mansions of Newport were added attractions for this most enjoyable Conference.

A most active Group Study Exchange was held this year with a District in Vienna, Austria. The inbound team members were guests at the District Conference at Newport. Liz Demarest, a member of the Westwood Club, led the outbound team. The exchange was one of the most successful exchanges held by our District.

In addition to continued support of the Rotary Foundation, the Walter Head Foundation and the Gift of Life program, the District also conducted an active youth exchange program, Interact program, and a RYLA Conference.

It was a year where "Be a Friend" and "Touching a Life through Rotary" were very actively pursued.
