Our guest speaker on August 26th was Gordy Flam; an engineering manager, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Player and workout buddy of Rotarian Tom Hokr.  Gordy gave an interesting presentation about  his career in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and some of the great players (competitors) that competed with him.  He was once a World Champion Player. BJJ is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting.  It is not solely a martial art, it is also a sport; a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people; and, ultimately, a way of life.  BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent.

Our guest speaker on July 1st was Tammie Epley and her "Students Connecting Through International Service" group for 2014-2015.  Tammie has been supporting an elementary school in the very poor border town of Sasabe, Mexico for over 12 years.  Things are shining a lot brighter down there thanks to her efforts.  In 2006, Tammie formed "Students Connecting Through International Service" and, since then, has been taking one fifth grader from each of six local elementary schools and one of the school principals each year down to Sasabe with her.  The school in Sasabe has benefited greatly from the exchange and our students have benefited from the multi-cultural experience.  Our Rotary Club has enjoyed working with Tammie and her students for over 8 years.  Tammie and the soon-to-be-sixth graders gave us an overview of their trip to Mexico in April.  Also, Tammie presented our Club President, Kevin Weist, a school bus award in recognition of our support in helping to provide a pre-owned school bus for the students in Sasabe in 2014.
