Welcome to the Rotary Club of Vegreville

Posted by Kitt Ray on Aug 14, 2013

Thank you for you interest in Rotary.

Rotary is a volunteer organization of 1.2 million business and professional people around the world working to provide humanitarian service and help build goodwill and peace.  About 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas conduct projects to address today's challenges - including illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water, and environmental concerns - while encouraging high ethical standards in all vocations.

Polio Plus is Rotary's flagship program - Rotary club members have contributed over $840 million US and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2 billion children in 122 countries.  Rotary has partnered with World Health Organization, UNICEF, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to achieve the goal of polio eradication.  Polio still stalks limited areas of Nigeria and the rugged Afghan-Pakistan border.  The final push is on and Partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative recently outlined a new 6 year US$5.5 billion strategy to wipe out polio for good by 2018.

Some of the Rotary Club of Vegreville's past community projects are:

-    Development of the Rotary Rendezvous Park downtown

-    Design and development of the Rotary Peace Park including a sheltered picnic area along with BBQs and a water system

-    Purchased 3 portable defibrillators for the curling rink, swimming pool, and arena

-    Purchased a Thermal Infrared Imaging Gun for the Vegreville Fire Department, which allows then o look for hard-to-see hotspots

-    Purchased new computer lab for the children's section of the local library

-    Encourage and assist local businesses to employ persons with developmental disabilities

-    Established and furnished a hospice room at St Joseph's Hospital

Some of the Rotary Club of Vegreville's International projects have included:

-    Belize, thorough the matching grant process, Vegreville Rotary Club, and 2 clubs from our District (5370) have sponsored 36 students to attend 4 years of high school, which they would not have been able to do otherwise

-    Kenya, ! $300,000 Rotary grant built sanitary toilet facilities which benefit more than 500,000 slum residents daily

-    Haiti, Rotary is constructing 80 rainwater collection tanks with built in filters, each with a 2,500 gallon capacity
