Presentation: Billy introduced our guest speakers: Mary Carlson and Wendy Cullinan who are involved with a committee to do a cape wide Rotary initiative with Habitat for Humanity.

Mary noted that Brad Boyd (Harwich) has taken on the lead with the initiative. She belongs to a small club also and thinks it would be good for clubs to partner.

Wendy is the Director of Human Development. Habitat has built 127 homes on Cape. She explained that home owners have to participate in 250 hours (per adult) in the building of the home. Buyers are given some budget training and they team with mentors. Mortgage usually $140,000 and payments are usually $650-$700 per month.
Volunteers who are committed volunteer twice a week.
She noted that all families except for 5 are still in their homes. If a family chooses to sell, it must be sold at affordable home price.
Land is acquired through community grant funds. They receive no funding from Habitat International.
They have re-stores in Falmouth and Yarmouth. Their staff (main office) is not as diverse as it could be. They have 8 full time and 1 part time employees.

Mary noted that all Rotary clubs should be involved with matching grants and a build day. Their goal is $100,000 and outreach to builders for donations. They are hoping to reach out to the Shelter from Storm Concert (Larry Brown) and others. It was suggested that they also partner with the Symphony and partner with the Melody Tent.

  • Meeting Venue: Billy, Norman and Randy have checked out Cape Space on Independence Drive as a possible venue to hold our meetings. Although we have enjoyed our time at the College, the cost of being there has been draining our finances. It is also difficult for those with disabilities to climb the hill and 2 sets of steps. The Cape Space is flexible and includes coffee. Refreshments will need to be purchased on a weekly basis and brought in. we may be able to work out a deal with Panera or Dunkin Donuts. You would be able to bring in your own breakfast food but, we would need to have something available for guests. We have paid the College through the end of June and could move into Cape Space on July 2, 2018. It was agreed by those present to make the move. Thanks were given to John Cox for all his help in getting us a space on campus and for the cooperation of the cafeteria and facilities staff. Cape Space is located behind Rogers & Gray. Billy reminded those present that members would have to commit to bringing in the refreshments. Vote was taken and approved for Barnstable Sunrise Rotary Club to move to Cape Space on July 2, 2018.

New project – Kelly and Christina will begin to work on a new project and should include Rotaract and Interact students.  RYLA is also coming up and we should send students to RYLA to hopefully peak their interest.
Luke’s Love Playground – Norman will call Suzanne Powers to see what we can do to help them.
Fundraising – all members should be thinking of new fundraisers
Good Grief Project – Amy Wyman (Falmouth Rotary) is scheduled to attend the Osterville Rotary Club and Billy is working on getting her in to the Hyannis Club to pitch her project.  We will continue to be supportive.
Why Rotary?  President Randy thanked Billy for helping his daughter connect with the Yarmouth police to help out with a project that she is working on.  This is just another example of the advantages of Rotary membership and networking.  Kudos to Billy!!!
Membership – Billy noted we need to grow and suggested that we formulate a plan and put the plan into action.  We also need more speakers and need to do more in-club service BAG meetings.

Sarah suggested putting labels over our addresses on the Rotarian magazines and distributing them at doctor’s offices, etc.

Other suggestions included attending newcomer’s club, attend Young Professionals meeting, contacting realtors to see if they would distribute our info to new homeowners and contacting Chambers of Commerce.

President Randy suggested a committee be formed to work on a membership plan and would also like to have one “after hours” meeting per month.  All members should be involved and we will discuss this again in two weeks.

Billy took the floor and noted that we now meet in a more remote location and we should have signage so guests can find us.  Kathy asked Sarah if a flyer could be done and copied and approved by college officials to put on bulletin boards around campus.  Billy mentioned that the Rotaract Club still did not have a banner with all sponsoring Rotary clubs listed.  He has been researching details on banners on some sort of stand and Billy made a motion to purchase one rollup banner for our Club to put at the bottom of the stairs and one rollup banner for the Rotaract Club with all sponsors listed at a cost of $550.00.  The motion was 2nd by Kathy and approved unanimously.

Sarah has put it on Facebook as an event.  Billy will send the link to the deejay to put on his Facebook page.  Flyers have been distributed to members along with a letter for soliciting donations.  Members are urged to get the flyers out and one needs to be dropped off at Bamboo so the public will see it.  Also, prizes are needed.  We need 3 big prizes; for example, a night on the Vineyard and a multitude of other gifts.  Time is passing quickly and we lose a meeting on February 19th with the President’s Day Observance.

Discussion was held regarding possible speakers.  Rose DiGregorio contacted Billy and is interested in presenting to our Club.  She is a CORD volunteer and is interested in Parkinson’s disease Awareness month.  Billy was asked to confirm her as our speaker.  She will be asked to come next week.

Kathy will put together a Speaker’s Calendar and will let members know by email when we have a speaker coming.

Kudos to all involved in the “Bag” service project meeting last week.  If anyone took pictures please send them to Sarah Newton so she can get them on the Web page.

Billy followed up from last week’s meeting.  102 bags were assembled and delivered to Dan McCullough of Team M-25 to be given to the homeless in our community.  Billy noted that the bags were well received and Dan would be happy to come and speak to our membership.  Feedback from members was also positive.

President Elect Randy asked about finding other organizations to work with doing service projects.  We will continue to do a service project at least once a month if possible during our regular meetings.  Wylton and Randy mentioned the Angel House and the Baby Center and Suzanne Powers (Luke’s Love Playground) needs to be contacted to see when the annual cleanup is.

Kathy noted that in the past, the Rotaract Club put together baskets twice a year and brought them to the Salvation Army for those less fortunate.

Norman noted that he will be away from May 1-22.

Motion was made by Norm and 2nd by Wylton to donate $25.00 for the District Conference auction.  Check should be made out to Billy as he is coordinating the Clubs in our area to put together a basket to be auctioned.  Passed.

President Ron had negotiated our getting space at the Hyannis Downtown day which is coming up on May 21st.  We will have a prime space with lots of foot traffic.  We would need to bring tables/chairs, information about the Club and something for the kids. (ie street chalk)  Motion was made by Wylton and 2nd by Norm to get involved in this effort.  Passed.

Billy suggested sending individual cards out to President Ron.  It was noted that cards had been sent to our members who are ill and our shut in friends.

Happy Bucks:
Billy – thoughts for Ron.  Good to have Norm back and congratulations to the Club for the Bag meeting/service project.
Norm – happy for Fenway opening day and his granddaughter is okay after swallowing a quarter.  He also ended up with mercer during his hospital stay and was surprised when the nursing staff came to his room with hazmat suits on.
Randy – happy to have a great vet as his daughter’s Great Dane ended up with bloat and is recuperating.
Kathy – attended Sarah & Ed’s wedding shower and it was a fun event; keeping President Ron in our thoughts and great meetings last week and again this morning.
Wylton – thoughts for President Ron and for our club

50/50 raffle:  $69.00 in pot.  Kathy won and got the 6 of Clubs.  She was given a consolation scratch ticket.

An updated Words of Wisdom schedule will be passed around next week.  There will be no meetings on April 17th (Patriot’s Day) or May 29th (Memorial Day).

Kathy will also put together a calendar of speakers.  If you have someone who would like to come and present, please let Kathy know the name and their organization.  We also need to do our member classification talks, to be incorporated in our regular meetings.

  • ADG Billy was presented with a Paul Harris pin +2.  Big applause for Billy!
  • Art Auction – February – Eldred’s will be handling it as the Maine Company can’t do it during the winter and will be held on a Saturday.  Sr. Center will cost $100.00
  • Theater – Billy Crystal was a choice however there weren’t any tickets for groups.
  • Mike Stotts has resigned from our Club to take care of his wife Peggy and to deal with the church responsibilities he has taken on.
  • We need new members – President Elect Randy suggested that we meet business owners in this area and invite them to join.  He and Ron are willing to check out the businesses.  Also, speakers are important when we are inviting people to come to our meetings.
  • Norm noted that all members should be required to bring a guest to a meeting…and if time is the issue maybe we should push the time to 7:30.
  • BJs – still looking at doing the diaper drive as construction is now done at BJs.
  • Street Festival – Ron noted that the street festival will be held sometime in the Spring 2017.
  • Kathy suggested the Rotaract Club now that they are allowed to become members while in college.  The College holds a Club Day and perhaps a few members should attend that and introduce Rotary to the new members going into the Rotaract Club.

ADG Billy noted that we don’t always follow through and we need to develop a plan to engage everyone. Discussion and ideas were suggested.  It was decided that everyone bring a guest to the 2nd meeting in January and club members will do a presentation on that day.

Billy is working on the postcard of information that we will hand out and will have it available on 12/19.

Interact Club update – Nef noted that they had a guest speaker from the Hyannis Rotary Club who spoke on Haiti Relief.  The students decided to purchase a water filter which will cost $200.  They are looking at ways to raise funding for this project and are thinking of doing bake sales etc.  Perhaps our club can help out by baking goods.  The students also want to work at a senior living facility.  They are still a small club and it has been difficult as their advisor is also the head advisor for all clubs on campus along with his other duties.

Kathy reminded members that we also need to be connecting with Rotaract students by visiting their club meetings (which also serves as a make up for club members).  Discussion held.

2.Goals – only charitable event we have to date is Safe Harbor and we are waiting on them.  Jack will let us know about getting toys etc.  However, we need incoming revenue.
3.Fundraising – Ron is waiting on the shows to be announced.  He also heard of a company in Maine that does antique auctions.  We would sell the tickets and they come and appraise items that people bring in.  You keep 100% of the revenue.  We would have to promote it and find a location to hold the auction.  Several locations were suggested: Sr. Center, College, Marstons Mills Fire Station, and Osterville Fox Hole.  It was suggested that we get a small company to set up coffee etc.  It was noted that the College would not be feasible financially.  Ron will get more information from the Maine Company and get back to the members.

Barnstable Sunrise Rotary Club Gift for Clean Water

Barnstable Sunrise Rotary Club President Ammad Sheik welcomed Dr. Kevin Curry, Professor of Biology at Bridgewater State University, to the club’s August 8 breakfast meeting at the Hyannis Golf Club.  Dr. Curry described his work through the University, and received a contribution of $1,500 from the Club, to support the installation of drinking water filtration systems in Cambodia.  The initiative is part of the Rotary District 7950 Pure Water Initiative, an arm of Rotary International’s “Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group,” or “WASRAG.”

The Club raised the funds through a play produced in partnership with a local Brazilian Theater troupe Bio da Lua (Bull of the Moon), entitled Morte e Vida Severina (“Life and death in wilderness), a story about a man lost in the wilderness looking for water and life.  The play was presented at the Tilden Arts Center Theater at Cape Cod Community College, and Leo Tataras of Bio da Lua was present at the breakfast.

The Barnstable Sunrise Rotary Club is seeking matching funds from the Rotary Foundation and District to support clean water projects on Cape Cod. “One of the goals of WASRAG is to connect local Rotary Clubs to ensure that clean drinking water is accessible and affordable for communities throughout the world,” according to Steve Brown of Centerville, the chair of the Club’s Rotary Foundation Committee.  “Access to clean drinking water has been affirmed by the United Nations as a basic human right,” Brown added.  We’re doing our part internationally, and here in Barnstable, as well.”

The Barnstable Sunrise Rotary Club meets every Monday morning at 7:00 AM at the Hyannis Golf Club.  Visitors are welcome, and membership in the Club is open to applicants who affirm Rotary’s “Four Way Test.”  For information, visit the club’s website at www.barnstablesunrise.org.
