Paul Horton shared an article from the 8/12/20 Wall Street Journal by Elizabeth Bernstein. The title is “Why Being Kind Helps You, Too – Especially Now”. In addition to the obvious benefit your kindness would bring to others, studies have shown that being kind can bring you physical and mental benefits. Specifically, you’ll have lower levels of stress hormones, you’ll be less lonely, less depressed, and happier. Happier individuals have been shown to have better cardiovascular health and to live longer. You probably perform several acts of kindness each day. Like me, you have probably been reading about an Oregon grandmother and her 5 year grandson who delivered a soft toy version of Baby Yoda to a donation center for firefighters on 9/12. Grandma added a note reading, “Here is a friend for you in case you get lonely and her grandson signed the note.” An article in the Omaha World Herald this morning reported that Baby Yoda has been to 4 wildfires in two states, has ridden in helicopters, and is often seen peeking out of a fireman’s jacket or backpack. A Facebook page documents his journey and thousands of people are following his travels. A small act of kindness is being shared with many.
Dan Blankenau told us that the project he is working on is a collaboration between the SAM Project and Rotary International. This collaboration project is comprised of nutrition, agriculture, micro-enterprise and water.
There are 16.2 million people in Zambia and 71.3% employed by agriculture. There are 59% of people who live in the rural areas and 60.5% are below the national poverty line ($1.90/day US). The rural population has 77.9% who fall below the national poverty line. The statistics is much, much worse in southern, drier areas.
Mark your calendars! District 5650 Governor for 2020-2021, Roxy Orr, will be with us on October 14, 2020. Please plan to attend the meeting to learn what the Goals for the District will be for Rotary year 2020-21.
This information about the YMCA STRONG Challenge came from Chris Klingenberg, so share it with your family and friends. Doesn't cost you anything.
Chris wanted to share an exciting challenge that we are starting up at the Lincoln YMCA called the STRONG Challenge. www.ymcalincoln.org/strong-challenge The challenge is to get people in our community active at the YMCA or outside the Y. It is a great way to combat loneliness and isolation too. You do not need to come into the Y to participate. It is free, open to anyone in the community. We have weekly motivations, challenges, activities, coaching, and a tracking sheet to help keep you going. The program was developed by the YMCA in Cincinnati, OH as a way to connect with their members and community. Now the program has spread to over 100 Y’s so far.
Please take some time to go to the link on the web page www.ymcalincoln.org/strong-challenge . Review the information. Sign-up, it’s FREE. Recruit others, they don’t have to be Y members. Begins October 19.
A total of $35.00 was collected in "Happy Dollars" on September 30th.

It took two Gene's to serve up some food at last year's SumFun Picnic. Due to COVID-19 we were unable to hold this picnic for the young people this year. Hopefully, we can do again in 2021.
He suggested “People are much deeper than stereotypes. That’s the first place our minds go. Then, you get to know them and you hear their stories and you say: I would have never guessed.”
Please keep the following Rotarians in your Prayers and Thoughts:
Barry Stelk and Mike Carr
We should continue to keep all of our teachers, school officials, and students, EMT's and first responders, hospital doctors and nurses, supermarket clerks, restaurant workers laid off or furloughed and waiting for unemployment, all those who are currently unemployed, human service organizations who still are open to serve those poor/homeless/hungry, funeral home workers, churches, airline employees, hotel employees, gas station and convenience store workers.
If you know of any of our members you would like for us to mention who are ill or need a prayer, please let Greg know and we will put it in the SPOKE.
