As we begin another Rotary year, it’s looking more likely we will be “socially distanced” for longer than anticipated. Our hope of reuniting in person on a more regular basis starting in August does not seem likely. Rest assured, it is a top priority and we will get back to face-to-face gatherings as soon as we can.
In the meantime, it was wonderful to see the masked smiles of those who were able to attend the picnic. For those of you who couldn’t be there, we missed you and hope to see you online soon! If you haven’t been able to join us via Zoom or need help logging on, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’d love to see you!
Understanding there are a lot of new stressors in everyone’s lives, we hope to focus our time this week during our zoom meeting on some basics and sharing ideas for the next few months. First, let’s make sure everyone knows how to find the club duties google doc on our website and answer any other questions about navigating both the local and RI site. Next, how does everyone feel about continuing zoom meetings? What about a safe outdoor social gathering once a month? Other ideas?
Thank you to everyone who has booked speakers. One big benefit of online meetings is that the world is now open to us! Our speaker can talk to us from anywhere. If you have an idea, we are all ears! Please don’t forget to check the club duties list to fill your speaker slot. If you need help with suggestions, just let us know.
How about service projects during a pandemic? Let’s brainstorm! We are a great group with big hearts. What can we do to help those in our own community who are struggling during this challenging time?
Creative fundraising ideas are needed! How do we safely fundraise when we can’t be together? Sadly, just like the Iowa State Fair, sausage wrapped pancakes on a stick will have to wait until 2021.
Finally, our grant proposal is due in August. All viable ideas will be presented to the board for a vote at our August meeting. If anyone has an idea, now is the time. Currently on the list: 1) Assistance for students at Shawnee Mission North in the form of school supplies and non-perishable food items. One Stop Shop delivered until students are back in the classroom. 2) Veterans Community Project—Pet welcome baskets or a Pet Pantry (food, leashes, water bowls, poop bags, blankets, etc.). Many of the vets settle into their new homes with a service animal. Their homes are furnished, but they don’t always have
what they need for their four-legged companions.
