Quote for Thought

"If we really want to love, if we really want to live, we must love until it hurts.
.....No Rotarian Whose motto is Service Above Self, I think, should call himself a Rotarian if he does not make time to serve. ....If we love, we begin to serve. And this is where that beautiful motto begins that the Rotarians have made this year, Take Time to Serve."

Kitchener Christmas Project

Posted by Janice Yule on Jan 12, 2016
On December 17th, 2015 Oskaya members and our Taiwanese exchange student, Jacob, delivered Christmas Bags to Grade 4 and 5 students at Kitchener Community School. This project has been a passion of our club for 8 years. It first began with shoe boxes and one class of approximately 17 students in 2007.  We now fill backpacks or bags for 50-60 students from 2 grades and 4 classes. The bags are filled with books (reading and activity), toques, gloves, socks, crayons/markers, tooth brushes, body wash/ shampoo, toys/games and candies. Each bag is individually labeled with the child's name making the presentation more personal. We love to see their expressions as they receive their gift, which may be the only one they receive. We are glad to help with in our Rotary community and we love our partner schools.

Literacy Month

Posted by Ray Ruth on Mar 08, 2012
Literacy
by Dr. Norman H. Proctor
RIBI President 2000-2001

Have you heard of Joseph Fair
Living in poverty and despair?
His house is made of iron and sacks
Which sadly food and water lacks
Father spends his day just hoeing
With very little seed for sowing
But they have no means to put that right
For they never learned to read or write.

Another Joseph name of Sunny
Lives in a land of milk and honey.
His parents are just proper mugs
Who spend their time with worthless drugs
They cannot ever put that right
For they never learned to read or write.

Josephine is a different Lass
A girl alone with lots of cash
But actually she hates each day
Selling her body to earn the pay
She too will never get that right
For she never learned to read or write.

My Rotary friends you know the score
With a little push we can do much more
Books and learning words are great
So tell your club to make a date
To give.  Our Foundation fund big schemes to show.
There is a way to let kids know
That school and books and words are fun
So please, just please---TELL everyone.

This evening we were blessed with a presentation by Shauna McKim who was our candidate on the Group Study Exchange to England in September/October 2011.  She gave us a great overview of her four weeks in England and told us it was very hard for her to return to Canada as she fell in love with the country and her host families.  We are currently looking for candidates to go to India in 2013. Rotary's Onward March

Posted by Ray Ruth on Feb 09, 2011
The history of Rotary spans one of the most turbulent, albeit the most significant, periods of man's history.  Even though this outline of Rotary events, within the space limitations, is short and incomplete, the record is an astonishing one - in growth, in development of principles, and in achievement.  Here is a chronological listing of Rotary highlights against a background of significant world news events.  I will do this over a period of time from 1905 to 1959

December 20th marked the 4th year that our club has donated Back Packs to the Grades 3-4 and 4-5 classrooms in Kitchener School.  This year we had 31 children in the two classrooms and 4 extra back packs for any new students or prizes for excellence.  Russell took the pictures and Michi and Letica our able Exchange Students helped with the delivery. Unfortunately we cannot put up pictures due to Privacy Issues with the school.  The students were very thankful and each one gave us a thank you card.

IRR Bowling Night

For those who are wondering about IRR Bowling Night.  It was the Interact, Rotaract and Rotary bowling fun night.  We had 16 bowlers and two observers.  Each team was made up of Interact, Rotaract and Rotary.  Team Rotary won.  Fun was had by all and everyone agreed we have to do more of this in the future. Pizza was donated by Juliana Pizza and everyone said it was the best. We raised approximately $110.00.  We have one commitment from a member to match with $100.00.  Proceeds are going to be donated to the school in Afghanistan.  Any one wishing to put in extra that would be greatly appreciated. The donation will be in the name of the three clubs.
