The Program from June 18

No Speaker - No Problem!

Our speaker for Thursday’s meeting was Casey Williams of Recology. His topic was to be “Talkin’ Trash.” Casey, however, did not show (I guess we aren’t trashy enough for him), so we had our own ‘talkin’ trash’ (Sunrise Style) meeting. Lead by President Elect Paul, individual members spoke about their recent experiences, including high-fives and recent events.

We heard from our guest, Steve Berger, a retired Pediatric Dentist who now lives in Oakmont. Steve is working on a photobook called “Beauty in the Backyard” with photos he’s taken from his Oakmont 1st Fairway backyard. (Hopefully, no photos of Sunrisers making terrible shots!).

Jim Gray is busy: His son Cameron is finishing his 8-year-plan degree from Sonoma State University! Cameron is now about to work on his master’s degree. Jim is also busy with his teenage son. As Jim says, “what a thrill.” And, Jim is about to have an article published in a new book. His article is called “Culture and Critical Care.” Seems timely. Well done, Jim!

Peter and Mary Banks are staying sheltered and have come up with a new game involving a variation of water polo. I didn’t get the details, but Peter and Mary are resourceful, so I’ll bet it is a good way to pass time during a pandemic.

Harry Coffey gave a shout-out to Javier Fonseca, who is a finalist for the Executive Director position at the Pediatric Dental Initiative, a local group of health care providers, child advocates, and social service programs working to assist the unmet oral needs of our low income children. Harry did not mention what the position is, but we think Javier is going to great.

Some other odds and ends: Roy and Barbara Johnston are excited about their new rescue puppy, Petey, a 5-year old Bison. Max Childs gave a shout out to Grossman’s Nochery and Bar, which is open Wed-Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (best Reubens ever!) and Rob Sanville is the proud father of Chef in Charge at Monti’s, bringing in the highest income in the Stark’s restaurant group (maybe we can foster a competition with Grossman’s?).

Well done Sunrisers – who needs a speaker?

Hit The Trail

Move 'em Out!

Twenty Sunrisers and guests trekked out in social distance stylel last Saturday along ther Channel Drive trail through Annadel State Park.  Enthusiastically led by Tall Dude Jim Moir, our group covered a couple of miles in under two hours.  Everyone who went out came back unscathed, with refreshed energy and renewed calls for resumed walks.

Upon return, we rested weary feet in the shade on the cool lawn at Star of the Valley Church in Oakmont.

Go for it Jim!!

The Living Room Blooms

Dirt + Water + Perspiration=

Sunrise and District 5130 combined re and with Sunrise' Carolyn Anderson,  Community Philanthropy Chair's grant writing skill yielded a District Matching Grant to create an herb and pollinater gardeen.

Project Manager Alina organized the perspiration volunteers including her parents and yours truly and a colleague to add the floral finishes.

First, thank you so much for attending the Living Room work days this
weekend! Some of you came one day, and several of you came both days!
Amazing! Without the generously donated time and energy of volunteers
like yourselves, this garden project would not have been feasible.

Saturday:
• We cleared the garden of previous annual planting
• We cleared re-sprouting Bermuda Grass
• We dug out the rain garden
• We dug out the holes for our trees (Some of the soil fought us the
whole way!)
• We planted the trees
• Put in the rocks to stabilize the overflow pipe from the tank to the
rain garden
• Finished installing last segment of bender board for the path
• Created label for all the native plants

Sunday:
• Installed all the native plants (each prepared for its new life with
water and soil amendment)
• Installed all iris and tube rose in point garden
• Installed irrigation transport line and emitters for trees and native
plants

The list is shorter for Sunday than for Saturday, but those of you who
came on Sunday know that it was plenty of work and no picnic in the
heat!

Thank you all for your hard work. With the flowers and habitat we
planted this weekend, we helped make the world more beautiful and
resilient this weekend!

Regards,

Alina Nuebel

News From "The Rotarian"

LAST LOOK

On the road for polio

Rotary launched its polio eradication campaign in the Philippines in 1979; the country had its last reported case of wild poliovirus in 1993. But by 2018, immunization rates in the country had fallen to 66 percent.

With the goal of increasing that number, the Rotary Club of Cebu organized about two dozen cyclists to ride around Cebu Island’s 360-mile perimeter for three days in November, stopping in three towns along the way to help conduct mass vaccinations. The cyclists also collected $19,000 in pledges for Rotary’s work to end polio.

Every dollar of District Designated Funds that your district contributes to End Polio Now is matched by the World Fund, up to $10 million. In addition, every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication, up to $50 million a year, is matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. That means every $1 of DDF becomes $6 available for PolioPlus grants.

If your district hasn’t made a DDF allocation this year, consider making one to End Polio Now.
